1) once i got into it, this book was truly lovely
2) i think part of my enjoyment of this book was impacted by my expectations going into it as i hadn’t read the synopsis anytime recently/maybe ever lmao

3 // the romance in this one, despite the length of the book, didn’t feel entirely earned or as developed as in the other books ive read from her. it still had it’s charms, but wasn’t my favorite from her.

update: after watching a video from chandler i was able to see what exactly bothered me about this book — the characters didn’t feel like puzzle pieces. i don’t feel like these character’s would’ve loved each other in any other circumstance except for this one. their love was circumstantial. comparatively, i feel like the couples in the meeting the duke series could have fallen in love in a number of ways and still felt earned/real. idk if that makes sense.

this was bad.

the pacing was off, the characters fell flat, and none of the emotions felt earned.

2 stars bc i didn’t Hate it and it wasn’t offensive, but wasn’t for me and wasn’t what i wanted.

update: upon reflection, i did in fact hate this book, 1 star

4.5 //
this book was very informative and i learned a lot. i would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about feminism and intersectionality. favorite chapters included: “of #fasttailedgirls and freedom”, “race, poverty, and politics”, “education”, “housing”, and “reproductive justice, eugenics, and maternal mortality.”

this being said, i felt that some essays got very repetitive and also jumped around a lot.
