I had such high hopes for this story with a stunning cover! I've been going back and forth in my head on whether to rate this a 3 or a 4 star, and I think I'll generously go with 3.5 rounded to 4 stars.

The lake atmosphere made for a great summer escape! I enjoyed the setting and general plot, and I did have interest in seeing the story through.

Unfortunately, I really struggled to root for Fern and Will. I didn't feel any strong emotions for any of the characters until the final chapters, and I'm really hung up on the fact that their relationship began with emotional cheating. My main issue is that the cheating felt romanticized in this novel and is just so wrong.

Idk. It made for good entertainment, but I had a difficult time really loving it. The back and forth between "then" and "now" also felt a little choppy to me this time.

My first BOTM read did not disappoint. I read at a quick pace through this book, not wanting to wait a moment to see what would happen next. Unfortunately the ending wasn't ideal for me, but it's still an enjoyable read.

A bit of a slow start, but it's worth it!

Brilliant! I was hooked from start to finish, following along with Addie as she grew through her 300 years of highs and lows. The ending certainly left me hanging and desiring more, but it still gave me just enough to be satisfied.

Very heavy on backstory, but an enjoyable read nonetheless. Pick this one up for dark academia vibes! I’m looking forward to the sequel.

My re-read was quite the trip down memory lane! Ah, the nostalgia. Sure, it's not the best literary work as an adult, but it's still an enjoyable read with lovable characters and phenomenal world-building.

The book is always better than the screen adaptation.

5 stars for the dragons!

Ok, so here's the thing. I knew what to expect going into this, and I got exactly what I was looking for. Is it the most beautifully written novel? No. Is it the best fantasy out there? No (at times it feels more dystopian than fantasy, tbh). Is it essentially Divergent mixed with GOT? Yep! Is it predictable? Absolutely.

However, it's engaging, entertaining, and addictive AF. I tore through the first 300 pages in one sitting, and I kept wanting more. It. Is. Utterly. Addictive.

I'm hoping Yarros will continue to build and flesh out the details of this new world in the second book, because I think there's a good bit to be explored deeper or further clarified, which may satisfy some readers that were critical of this one.

This is also one where I think you have to go cover to cover to gain understanding on what's really going on within the world. DNF early on and I could understand some confusion and frustration with various aspects of the characters, plot, and world. Gotta stick with it if you struggle early because it delivers by the end!

If you're looking for the ideal magical, ominous, and cozy fall read, look no further than an escape to Saoirse Island in this addictive story. I loved every second of it, and I wish I could read it for the first time again!

I struggled to solidify a rating for this book because it started out as a four star before dragging a bit at the end. Overall, it's a comforting, insightful, quick read that is very enjoyable!
