I wanted to love this suburban tale of mystery and intrigue, but I had a hard time getting into the thrill and really pulling for any of the characters. It's not a bad read, just not a great one either. The story will likely fade from my memory fairly quickly, leaving a "meh" in its place.
"But time will slowly heal you, as it is doing for me. There are good days and there are difficult days. Your grief will never fully fade; it will always be with you--a shadow you carry in your soul--but it will become fainter as your life becomes brighter. You will learn to live outside of it again, as impossible as that may sound. Others who share your pain will also help you heal. Because you are not alone. Not in your fear or your grief or your hopes or your dreams. You are not alone."
I haven't cried reading a book in nearly a year, but this one caught me off guard! The above quote spoke to me, offering incredible comfort and relief for my own grief, translating complex feelings into such beautiful prose. Thank you, Rebecca, for putting this into words! I truly felt like this one was written specifically for me.
Ok, but seriously... it's only June and I can guarantee this will remain my favorite read of the year. I finished it last month, and I still cannot stop thinking about it!
This is a book I could not put down. The writing, the characters, and the plot were phenomenal and had me enthralled! It's a character-driven historical romance with fantasy elements set in a world that I am desperate to learn more about. I very quickly fell in love with Roman and Iris, and I'm waiting (rather impatiently, I might add) for the next installment.
All the stars! I need book #2 NOW!

Finally got around to my first Taylor Jenkins Reid novel, and it did not disappoint! Great early summer read.
Cozy, atmospheric fantasy at its finest! What an enthralling start to the duology.
Rebecca's prose is lyrical and enchanting, painting a vivid scene. Her characters are complex and flawed yet lovable. The story winds and webs, slowly building itself piece by piece.
I cannot recommend this duology more! If you have yet to read any of Rebecca's work, this is a fantastic story to dive into!

I'll read (and love) anything Rebecca Ross writes, including her grocery lists.
This book made me realize there's nothing more aggravating than a completely open-ended conclusion. Beautiful writing, interesting plot, but I'm dying to know how Vega's story continues!
