Absolutely not

Phew boy, where do I even begin with this…

Ninth House is an exquisitely written dark academia that lived up to all of my expectations and beyond.

What is this book about?

Well, in short, an ex-junkie that didn’t finish highschool is given a once in a lifetime opportunity to attend on of the most prestigious schools, Yale. How, you may ask? Because she can see ghosts. After a horrible event leaves some dead and Alex Stern alive, a man visits her hospital room and offers her this once in a lifetime chance. turns out Yales full of mysteries and magic and rituals and her talents of seeing the dearly departed can aid in keeping the balance and laws between the magical houses of Yale in check. But, as she dives deeper into their world she realizes things are much more dark and disturbed than thought and she gets her self caught up in a whirlwind of trouble.

My thoughts

To be quite honest there isn’t much I didn’t like about Ninth House . The beginning can be a tad on the confusing side, if you aren’t used to reading adult fantasy. But once you get past the throngs of information dumped, you are sucked into the stories dark maw and spit back out with the sense of euphoria and dread. And I don’t mean dread in a bad way, I mean it in the sense of you fear for everyone and DAMMIT BARDUGO BOOK 2 IS TOO FAR AWAY *clears throat*

I will admit, with all the hype and the plethora of trigger warnings (i.e. Rape of a child, forced feeding of shit, self harm, sexual assault, self harm, drug use, form of date rape, etc) I was going into it hesitant but hopeful. Leigh her self warned this book would be DARK dark and boy did she hold true to that promise.

Ninth House held me on the edge of seat the whole way through and even had me looking over my shoulder a few times. Again, being mindful of the TW (see above) I implore you to read this masterpiece, and let it take you on the thrill ride of your life.

Overall

I gave this wonderful dark academia a 5/5 stars and can not wait for book 2 to finally be in our hands. There are many places this story could go, and I expect it will take a turn we never see coming

3.5. It was good! But not anything crazy
