"-are you drunk?
-im a poet."
As much as i love Alice Oseman's other work, getting through this book felt like a chore. Literally every character in this book is a danger to themselves and those around them, not in a "quirky depressed teen lolz" way but in a potential domestic terrorist way. Main character Tori suffers from a severe case of not like other girls syndrome and the book uses other peoples trauma as a way to enrich her story in a way that feels icky to me. The example to this that stuck with me was how she starts screaming to a unsuspecting Lucas about Charlies ed out of seemingly nowhere, completely irrevelant to the conversation. A good summary of the book is this quote from when Tori is having a breakdown and almost becomes self-aware, but eventually doesn't:
"...my current diary(which i do not write in anymore), i open it up, read a few entries, and close it again. Its very sad, very cliche teenager. I disgust myself."

This is the point in the series where we start to learn more about charlies ed and things start to get more serious. Its not a complete change of pace of events and that makes it all the more realistic. We still continue to get cute and funny moments, but its not all sunshine and butterflies from this point on. Alice Oseman gives us the perfect balance of everything- from sarcasm to angst, from dorky jokes to serious discussions about mental health- that its hard to believe the characters are in fact not real and my friends.
Graphic: Eating disorder, Panic attacks/disorders, Suicidal thoughts, and Outing
Moderate: Biphobia, Bullying, Homophobia, Self harm, Lesbophobia, and Alcohol

comfort read. i just love seeing queer teens living the life i didnt get to. the story is realistic, not downplaying the homophobia but also not turning it into "suffer porn". the characters are relatable and behave like actual teenagers, we dont get that a lot even in the ya genre. the only downside is it finishes really quickly :/
Moderate: Bullying, Homophobia, Panic attacks/disorders, and Sexual harassment
Minor: Emotional abuse, Hate crime, Toxic relationship, Outing, and Gaslighting
