- “Why does it seem so strange that another country should have a culture as conglomerate as our own?” I have never thought this was strange???

I wanted a cutesy holiday rom com and this fucking delivered not a hallmark too cheesy story but something that felt real. One of my favorite books I’ve read in a WHILE.

This book is very… strange? Like the main character is too nervous and anxious for her own good. But then again it was interesting because I’ve never read a vampire book like this before so idk…
Like I love that Lid watches eating videos and asmr bc that makes her relatable but then her saying ‘lol’ instead of laughing at jokes and then being a performance artist to have an excuse to buy pigs blood 😭 like girl you’re actually kinda crazy maybe just like idk try to hunt and be normal?
I was so happy when she just went off and started munching on people but it took her the literal entire book to be like oh maybe I’ll try a human? And don’t get me started on Ben he was a fucking idiot and added nothing to the story other than her having her first romantic interaction with someone. it added nothing to the plot, But then I ask myself what was the plot? Bc it just felt like a glimpse into Lydia’s life. But I’m also not like that mad about it bc I somewhat enjoyed listening to the audiobook when I would work out? Idk this book has me all sorts of conflicted.
As the third book in the series- if you thought the writing would improve… jokes on you. But the drama… the tea… STILL PIPING HOT.
Bones is iconic and hot as always. His romantic bone really was shining in this one, but why the author has to tell us he was a slut constantly kinda boggles my mind. Jeaniene playing the ‘he died’ card was also like 🧍🏻♀️ I know there’s so many more books left in the series you would not kill him off now 😭. Also Bones randomly inheriting mind reading abilities took me out and Cat just happening to develop shields… like girl HUH? And the whole drama with Tate… I could’ve done without.
Okay I was not expecting Vlad aka Dracula to show up let alone him being my new fave character he is funny and literally saved the day MULTIPLE TIMES. He saved Cat’s life when she was about to off herself bc she thought bones was dead and he was so sexy when he licked the blood off her forehead in the fight scene IM SORRY! Why does everyone want Cat and why can’t a vampire find me…
Last thing I’ll say is… Zombies? Really…
But I still ate it up. LOL

I can confidently say I wouldn’t normally have picked this book up, but I’m glad I’m in a book club where I can experience different kinds of reads! In the beginning it was a bit hard to get into- Often while reading this I would pause and have to look up certain words, or if the event actually took place because it was written so realistically. But, It was interesting how the author would sometimes purposefully clue the reader in on if something bad was about to happen. The tension building was fantastic, and I really enjoyed certain premises I haven’t thought about before. For example
I was fascinated by the premise that a bacteria life form could have lived on earth before advanced human primates and gone into the atmosphere before humans could adapt and then that be the “alien life form” that came back to earth and we are just not aware of it because it was something before humans. Like wow big brain stuff! I will have to admit The ending was lack luster to me. I figured the climax would be hall having to turn the bomb off but just over all the end felt sudden and I was left like oh- somewhat anticlimactic. Especially that they just left the virus do its thing since it mutated… like couldn’t it mutate back?
Overall, There was a lot going on all at once from the very start of the book. There were so many characters to remember I was very lost. I feel like it didn’t start picking up and getting to the good stuff until the very end of the book. I’m not sure if they did that intentionally since there’s a second book, but I wish the juicy stuff would’ve been sooner. I needed more of the snow king winter prince man. He was so flirty and protective and mysterious… THEIR KISS HAD ME SCREAMING.
Vasilisa’s step mom Anna was so annoying And don’t get me started on the Psycho Priest that only thinks there’s one god and no one could worship anything else. I loved when Vasilisa stood up to him and told him to save everyone else but leave her alone.
The gods/devils/sprits that she could see were so cute. I loved the fight sequence at the end. I just wanted more of the intense stuff. Most of the story was people calling our girl a witch besides her brother (whom I loved). Lots of other characters seemed kind of irrelevant, but we shall see in the next book if they come up more.
Overall I had lots of feels about this book. There were so many situations that could’ve been diffused by conversation and then it didn’t happen so as a reader I was just frustrated. I realize this isn’t meant to be a “happy story” but it left a bad taste in my mouth.
Like If this was a murder mystery that focused on the ins and outs of Lydia‘s disappearance and later death I think I would be a lot more interested. The set up was great with the Foreshadowing about the lake… but then it just turned. I felt so bad for Hannah and Nathan. I also called Jack liking Nathe from their first interaction lmao. My favorite part was just fancasting the book as if it was a mini-series.
Thoughts while reading:
- Ew I don’t like that James thinks his TA looks like his daughter and yet there’s like tension between them ew
- IF NATHANS SISTER WAS FUCKING MISSING AND HE REFUSES TO BRINGNUP JACKCWHO MAY BE A PRIME SISPECT YOU STUPID STUPID BOY
- What the actual fuck is James doing? You’re gonna fuck a student when your daughter just died and your wife is grieving at home? FUCK YOU UGH he gives me such Nick vibes from gone girl
- The whole pool situation… like if you see your son being bullied and you don’t go step in even to be like “Nathe get out of the pool Lydia called and she needs us to go get her NOW.” Like fucking make up an excuse to get your child out of that situation
- I get that the mom wanted a new life because she felt unfulfilled but leaving your children without even thinking about like consulting your husband first like “hey I want to go to med school so I’m doing it are you going to support me or not” like whatttt this could be avoided with communication 😭
- Lydia just wanted friends and to be noticed so when Jack have her that ofc she was gonna cling to him…
- The flashback flash to present I feel like there needs to be more of a distinction because sometimes I’m so confused. I have no idea when events are. Occurring
- The clerk just giving Nathe under age alch 😭
To preface- I’ve read this novel probably 6 or 7 times, but realize I’ve never reviewed it on here so I had to pick it up again.
This book got me into reading. After being diagnosed with Dyslexia I hated reading, any and every book was unappealing until this one. I owe a lot to this book so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Thoughts:
- I kinda forgot how stark and unforgiving Katniss is… she really is selfish and morbid but growing in her circumstances that’s very normal
- I still love cinna GOD
- Peeta is just such a caring kind and giving person absolutely selfless PLEASE
- This book seems so simple but it hits everything on the checklist. Like it’s an easy read but so immersive
- Effie is so funny
- How did I miss the game makers wanting to give her a boob job and Haymitch fighting then yas queen her body her choice
- Peeta my heart breaks for you… “it was all for the games”
