The prose is incredibly powerful, and whilst I found the story a little slow at first, it got far better as it went along. Great portrayal of themes of (mild spoilers)

race, gender, self-destruction, and family conflict.

Would highly recommend!

It's a very cute children's book, but the quality of the prose isn't great. There's a lot of "sassy" comebacks, which sound cool for kids, but ruin some very good dialogue if reading from a more mature perspective.

This book is an amazing encapsulation of Americana and the complex themes around it. Though it was very, very slow at first, I found myself being enthralled in the last third, with all of the strings shown in the novel fitting together perfectly. If you like themes of Americana and religion, you should absolutely read this book!
