In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

The author was so creative in recounting such a traumatic experience. Abuse and psychological trauma are often difficult to explain, relay in such a clear way. The book's metaphors and analogies are helpful in that way.
The tropes and clichés used to tell her story make for a mesmerizing read.
The Dream House as Choose Your Own Adventure was by far my favourite story. :)

omg i finished babel

i'm in shock

i am paralized

the weight of those words is immesurable. i actually don’t know what to say except i’m utterly emotionally exhausted because the themes the book discusses are so heavy, the ending is so traumatizing

jesus christ it feels like i have the weight of the world's problems on my shoulders and i’ll never look at anything the same again.

this is dark academia’s version of a little life, it has to be.

i will literally never be the same. i need hElP
Play It as It Lays by Joan Didion

i'm just fascinated by 60's/70's L.A.
the juxtaposition between the party life and how depressed and apathetic people found themselves.
the vague writing style, the nonchalant way Joan Didion presents us with this woman, that seems frozen in a time where everything is happening around her and to her is so masterfully done and fascinating.
it really captures the realities of depression, the apathy that comes with actually being done with life, the way we easily fall back into habits because it is easier even if we know we do not want that.

to sum up, i love me some fiction about a depressed woman. make her a disgraced actress going through an abortion and apathetic about life and i'm set. couldn't ask for more.

The prose is exquisite and incredibly immersive. the way she explains behaviour or characterises a friend or famous acquaintance is *chef's kiss*. she's a "bad girl" and she knows it and makes it look so glamorous and authentic.
this book essentially reads as a feminist badass manifesto where the mc doesn't even adhere to "feminist" rules. she does whatever she wants and (imo) exploits the patriarchy in brilliant ways because of her brilliant insight. she knows what men want and manouvers her life in a way that she only gives them what they want if she wants to whilst having "kill all men" energy at the same time.

"And he trated me with chivalrous masculine know-how that I sopped up like a person who'd never heard of how chivalry was another nefarious masculine scheme to keep women in their place."

this book was excellent and i'm only giving it 4 starts because the start is so slow and even though i wasn't bored by it there were too many scenes that confused me and left me wondering what the hell i was doing reading this book that doesn't seem to have a plot or an end - cause it's not like this book is short so 300 pages in you start to question your choices.
but i am glad i pushed through because this book is incredible.

the character work is out of this world - my favourite is Logen and his "I'm still alive" little mantra - but alll of the characters are very strong and well realised. they all feel real and three dimensional. they feel like real people who would live in this world.

now that i've finished the book i appreciate the structure, how it feels like we've started at different points of the outer edge of a circle and then started coming closer and closer to the middle until by the end every plotline met, every character made sense in the same bubble.
the writing is very engaging, it flows and it is so funny. there are several funny scenes in this book (some of which made me laugh out loud).
