The Given Day by Dennis Lehane

Very satisfying read - loved it for the historical context, even though the unfairness was painful.
Blood Hunt by Ian Rankin, Jack Harvey
4.0
Blood Hunt was published in 1995 under a nom de plum - I wonder if Rankin was trying to protect the Inspector Rebus brand. In any case, I enjoyed this anti-corporation, conspiracy thriller which I found engaging and well-written. It's funny--and refreshing--to read a book where the Internet and ubiquitous cell phones don't play a role in the plot even though it makes the book dated. What is not dated is the writing - and the continuing problems with chemicals and our food supply.
The Neighbor by Lisa Gardner

This was a quick, engrossing read. I enjoyed it, and I did like it in some ways better than "Live to Tell" (the next book in the DD Warren series) but I get irritated by DD's flat characterization. All the same, it's a great spring break book.
The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly
4.0
I am loyal to Michale Connelly even though I think some of his recent books have been rather skimpy. This one felt more substantial and nuanced. Haller is an interesting character to me. He is so self-assured and performative. The last chapter is still giving me chills.
The Privileges by Jonathan Dee

I wanted something horrible to happen to the Moreys, which seemed quite ungenerous of me. Much of made was the great love Adam and Cynthia shared, but I didn't register their relationship as full of love or joy but based on dependence. They did share a belief that the past was not worth revisiting, reflecting on, or understanding. I was somewhat flustered by the quick changes in point of view, but otherwise thought the writing lovely. I just didn't feel a connection with the characters, though I was quite excited when Jonas was relocated to University of Chicago since that is my alma matter.
