  • Strong character development? It's complicated
This was so confusing. I didn't really follow TAP. I didn't mind, I figured it was a difficult middle book. But I don't know what the plot has been since the ending of TAS? Obviously these are very character-driven books, but the character development doesn't feel like it's rooted or reflected in plot events, so it's very hard to follow. A lot of the character development is also impossible to follow. I think Libby's plot arc has been the only one that's made sense. So many of the chapters are just characters ruminating on topics I can't follow or understand. I don't see how they come to their conclusions. I don't see how any of it leads anywhere. This book felt like a massive 'fuck you' to linear plots – and, like, I get that it's about the multiverse, but as a reader I care about events in this world, not what might have happened in an alternate timeline? Also they don't even do the experiment to open up the multiverse so what was the point? I thinking the ending is the clearest example of where this story falls down. The penultimate chapter is from Nothazai's POV? Explaining his motivations? It's end of the trilogy, why are you telling me his backstory now? I don't know who he is and I don't care, none of this info added anything to my perception of the story? Is the conclusion just nihilism? Everyone realises life is pointless and the world is fucked and also most of the characters die. This is not the slay you thought it was.

the first book wasn't great but this one was difficult to get through, even in audiobook form. i know violet's literally the main character but can we get through one chapter without everyone talking about how she's so powerful and amazing and god's gift. even xaden gets done dirty in this book, he's not allowed to care about protecting his home more than he does about violet. every chapter ends with a shitty cliffhanger and violet saying something like "well, that happened." this book was never edited i swear.
