Read almost all of this in the queue to see Freddie Mercury's stuff before it gets auctioned
Weird, but brilliant. Lent to me by my grandpa who loves Penelope Fitzgerald, and I think he's thrilled to have finally converted one of his grandchildren!
This is an incredibly clever book - even more so than Parable of the Sower in my opinion - but it's also very heavy going, so it's one of those books you have to read at the right time for you. Lauren remains a really compelling narrator, and the addition of the framing narration from her daughter keeps the structure fresh rather than feeling repetitive after reading Sower.
not usually an audiobook person but loved the audiobook of this. as an autistic woman I really appreciated Brady's honesty and would recommend this to anyone autistic or not, although very occasionally there were points where the writing felt a little mean-spirited
Clever and interesting, with some wonderful character and worldbuilding work. This book is the reminder I needed of the power of storytelling to explore and teach about the world in ways nonfiction can't. However, the pacing didn't work for me and the middle dragged somewhat, which is a shame as the best bits of this book are worth it. I see how it won the Booker, just wish it had been a little shorter!
