I know we’re not supposed to, but I absolutely judged this book by its cover, and lucky for me the story was just as beautiful. I’ll admit that I’m not very familiar with the story of Mulan beyond the Disney movie, but I really enjoyed this book. I loved Meilin’s character and how her motivations developed over the course of the book. I will always be here for strong female characters who go after what they want. I liked the author’s writing style and found both the magic system and politics easy to follow. I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next book!

I really enjoyed this book! I really liked the world that the author created and thought that the magic system was easy to understand, but man, I loved these characters. I thought they were well developed and fleshed out. I couldn't help but sympathize with them and feel their heartache. While I did love the story, there were a few places where I felt like the writing could have been stronger, and I also thought there was one plot hole that, while it didn't annoy me, I did question. All that aside, I throughly enjoyed reading this and I'll be eagerly awaiting for the sequel to come out next year.

I was hesitant to start this book because I had seen a lot of mixed reviews about it, but I really liked it! I felt instantly pulled into the world and found the magic system and politics easy to follow. I thought the author did a good job developing the characters, and I just enjoyed her writing style in general. My only real critique of it is that the FMC’s inner monologue felt quite repetitive at times, which was annoying considering how long the book is. But overall, I had a lot of fun reading this one and I’m so excited for book two to come out!

I always like Megan Miranda’s books and this one is no exception. I really liked the writing, there were a lot of moving parts in this one and I thought she balanced it well. There was a good amount of suspense and build up to the reveal at the end. My only real critique about this book is the pacing. I felt like it was slow to start and then a big rush at the end to get everything wrapped up- and I still had some questions when the book was finished. But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it 🤍

Another excellent read from Eskens! I was very happy to see the return of Max Rupert- I think he’s my second favorite Eskens character, behind only Lila Nash. This book has all of the same elements that make the author’s other books so good: interesting characters, tense situations, high stakes, etc. I would highly recommend all of Eskens books, but don’t start with this one! You should definitely read, at the very least, The Heavens May Fall and then The Deep Dark Descending before this one.
