Thank you JKS Communications and the author for a copy of the book!
I have not had the opportunity to review an audiobook in some time. But My Brain Had Other Idea: A Memoir of Recovery from Brain Injury by Deb Brandon is narrated by Helen Lloyd. This memoir is about the author’s journey with brain injury. She has a condition called cavernous angiomas which are malformed blood vessels in the brain. This causes her to have seizures and other painful medical events. However, when she started having symptoms they were not only painful but horrifying. The book begins right after her brain surgery. After going through that surgery, everyone believed there would be an improvement. Not for Deb Brandon. This is just the beginning of a long road of struggle and recovery.
This condition sounds utterly terrifying and I commend the author for talking about her struggles. Throughout it all, she continues to work and spend time with her family. The moments when the symptoms set in, readers can feel the authors anxiety and fear. The description is extremely detailed. However, the pacing is a bit slow. There is a lot of internal dialogue about everything around her.
The narrator does a great job reading this story. Her voice is clear and enunciates well. When the author describes her fear, the narrator does a great job of showcasing that fear in her voice.
Overall, I rate this audiobook 4 out of 5 stars!

I have a weakness for a good historical romance. The Fearless Highlander by Amy Jarecki has been sitting on my shelf since the 2017 InD’Scribe Con. I hate that I have waited so long to read it. The Fearless Highlander is the first book in the Highland Defender Series. This book starts off in the year 1691 in the dark depths of Fort William’s prison. Hugh MacIain is suffering from the bloody flux but when the Colonel’s daughter, Charlotte Hill, tends to him, he has the strength and will to break free. He finds a way out with the help of Charlotte and vows to never forget her. When Jacobite cause rises, Hugh’s clan is in danger and this danger leads him back to Charlotte once again. Even though they begin to fall for each other, politics and war will threaten to separate them forever.
This book kept me enthralled from beginning to end! Amy Jarecki does a marvelous job at describing the history of the time of the Jacobite rebellion. There is incredible detail that really made me feel as if I was in the story. The research that went into this must have been daunting because there is the historical detail but also the political and social issues of the time. However, the author flawlessly created a beautiful story that is well researched.
I love the characters. Charlotte and Hugh make quite the unstoppable pair. Hugh is complex as he has the survival of his clan to think about but he cannot deny the love he has for Charlotte. I love Charlotte’s conviction. Even defying her father, she knows what is right and nothing holds her back from doing the right thing. Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I really recommend this story for those who love Scottish history and romance.

They Came For Freedom by Jay Milbrandt is essentially the story of the Pilgrims. The story is nonfiction with some dialogue woven throughout. The story begins long before the Pilgrims come to the New World. The author argues that we, as Americans, have very little knowledge of the story of the Pilgrims and what they endured. He starts with the execution of Barrow and Greenwood, two Separatists who refused to be a part of Queen Elizabeth’s Church of England. The author then chronicles their dangerous journey to find freedom.
The author calls this book The Forgotten, Epic Adventure of the Pilgrims. His argument that America does not know the true history of the Pilgrims could be true. I am familiar with this history. My degree is in European history and religious studies. The author does know his history, the book is well-researched. I just wish that it would provide information that is not already out there. When reading a historical nonfiction about an event I grew up learning, I want it to be raw and riveting. This book is just retelling the story we already know. However, I really do appreciate the author’s passion for history. I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

I have a weakness for historical fiction, particularly for ones that take place in England. A Bound Heart by Laura Frantz is nothing short of spectacular. We are introduced to Lark who lives on the island of Kerrera and a healer of sorts. She works in the stillroom and is the keeper of bees. She grew up with the laird named, Magnus. His wife is not able to conceive a child and Lark tries to help. However, Magnus' wife dies and Lark and Magnus are left to blame and are sent to America in indentured servitude. On the voyage over she becomes the guardian of a baby named Larkin. Even though she has lost her home, Larkin fills a void. The voyage is tough and long but her heart starts yearning for a man she has known her whole life...Magnus. Will they be able to survive in America? Is there any hope for happiness?
This is a wonderful epic. It has everything, wonderful characters, drama, romance, and adventure. Lark is a marvelous main character, wise beyond her years. Magnus is the typical, seemingly perfect Scotsman. They make quite the pair. What I love is that this story does not solely focus on the development of their love. The characters develop individually and mastering their own courage. There always seems to be danger and it keeps the readers on their toes.
Once you pick up this book, there is no putting it down. The pacing is just right. Even though this story takes place in another time, it is impossible not to relate to the characters and feel for them. Lark's connection with Larkin is by far the most heartwarming aspect of this book. Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This is an absolutely wonderful book for those interested in history, romance and a touch of inspiration.

There is always one downside to novellas--I always want more. 12 Days at Bleakly Manor by Michelle Griep is a Christmas novella with a touch of mystery. The story introduces Clara Chapman who receives an invitation to go to Bleakly Manor for 12 Days. She does not know who the host is but her Aunt encourages her to go. When she arrives she is there with a few other eccentric people who also received an invitation. One person, her ex-fiance, Benjamin Lane. Benjamin left her at the altar and never to see him again...until now. Their host remains most elusive. Those who make it through the 12 Days of Christmas, will get what the need. Clara needs money to help her brother. Benjamin, his emancipation papers from being falsely imprisoned. Healing and trust need to happen in order for them to get through the next 12 days. But there can only be one winner...
This is a charming novella, I only wish I read it in December. Since it is a series, I will have to read the 2nd book this Christmas. It did leave me wanting more. I felt that the story just breezed by. But that is usually the case with novellas. I do love the characters, they were all unique and played off of each other extremely well. I love how it incorporates human goodness and faith in humanity, themes that are usually common during Christmas. My favorite aspect is the mystery of the novel. It keeps the reader guessing throughout. It incorporates Charles Dickens in the most fantastic way.
If you are looking for a quick afternoon read, (even though I suggest that this is read during Christmas) that has romance and mystery intertwined, then this is it! I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars!!

The High Sierras may be beautiful but they are unforgiving. That is the backdrop for The Reluctant Warrior by Mary Connealy. This is the second book in the High Sierra Sweethearts series. Cam Scott has been in war for so long he doesn't know any other way of life. He has found his daughter and nephew, but they don't know him or trust him. They prefer the company of Gwen. Gwen decides that it is heartless to keep children who aren't hers, no matter if she feels that they are. Gwen puts her differences aside to help Cam find his nurturing side. However, the man responsible for killing his family is stalking them and they are in danger at every moment. They will have to learn to trust each other in order to survive this evil man and the unforgiving winter of the High Sierras.
This is such a sweet series. I did have the chance to read the first book in the series and enjoyed it. I love how it picked up where it left off and closed that chapter of the story. However, it did keep a couple of aspects of the story open for the next book in the series. Which I am crossing my fingers and toes that it is about Penny. Penny is a supporting character, being the sister of Cam, but to me, she is the most fascinating and the most fierce. I enjoyed her character immensely and she stood out the most for me. Cam and Gwen are wonderful characters as well. They both have amazing development throughout the story.
There are a few moments that were a little slow. For instance, the villain's point of view. I felt his point of view offered nothing to the development of the story and his parts tended to slow down the pace of the novel. I must say, the parts of the family surviving, overcoming danger, and learning to live together were written beautifully. The author weaves a little wit in the writing which is a wonderful addition.
Needless to say, I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series...in fact, I may have just requested it. Stay tuned for that review! I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
Thank you Bethany House for a chance to read this book!

“Warren dropped into the water, relieved to be free, and sank to the bottom. A sinking most people experience only in the first stage of drowning, but for Warren, a familiar weightless transition from air to liquid, care to carefree.” -Scuba page 190
Scuba by Jimmy Olsen takes readers on a journey into another world. One that very much exists, just one that is not frequently discussed in books. The story begins on the seas in the year 1806. An epic ship battle occurs. Then fast forward to the year 1961, Warren Wilson takes an interest in diving. He has heard the stories of his ancestors and dreams of making the discovery of the ship. The book then narrates Wilson’s life. He has a life of heartbreak which pushes him into a more unconventional way of living. This leads him to become a dive captain on Charming Island. Hoping for a life of peace instead is faced with a danger that threatens those he loves most.
This book is definitely a life epic. It is not just a story, but a life story. Not only that it weaves a little history into it as well. I love how the book begins with an epic battle on the seas. It sets the pace for the rest of the novel. There are some points where the narrative is a bit slow but it starts strong and ends strong. Even though I enjoyed this read, I felt that the writing was more the author telling a story, rather than showing. I wasn’t completely immersed in the story.
However, I love the knowledge that the author has about scuba diving. His education definitely shows, which really adds to the depth of the story. I wasn’t a huge fan of the main character Warren Wilson, but I definitely love Rosa. She was a strong character, who loved fiercely.
Overall, I rate this story 3 out of 5 stars. If you love epics with a little history involved then this book is for you.
