You all know how much I love history. I think the reason why so many people are fascinated with the history of Romanov's is that it is so deeply rooted in legend and mystery...even though, today, we do know the true story. The Romanov Empress by C.W. Gortner is the story of Tsarina Maria Feodorovna. The story begins years before she is known as the Tsarina. It begins when she was just a Danish Princess at nineteen. Her story begins with love and ends in utter tragedy. When she marries the Romanov heir, her courage will be tested as she learns about her new country. She makes friends and bitter enemies at court. But one thing is for sure, she will do anything for her family.

This book is such a beautiful and heartbreaking epic. It perfectly chronicles Maria Feodorovna's life. The details are really what makes this story wonderful. The author truly went into depth with Maria. It is also refreshing to see the story of the Romanov's from her point of view. Reader's are introduced to the characters as we have heard them in history classes, like Queen Victoria, Rasputin, Anastasia, and so many more.

One of the things that stood out the most to me is the relationships. The author really grasped the fragility of being in power and the fact that there is hardly anyone to trust. From the historical detail to the constant sense of danger, this book kept me turning the pages. History lovers will just love this book. Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you to the author, Ballantine Books, and Goodreads for a copy of this book!

So I know how many of you have heard of Bookbub, but they just released a similar program for audiobooks called Chirp. They send you discounted audiobooks every day. When I saw the cover for Spindle Fire by Lexa Hillyer and narrated by Fiona Hardingham, I knew I had to have it. First of all, I think we can all agree that the cover is absolutely gorgeous. Second, you all know how much I love fairytale retellings. Plus, this one is about my favorite fairytale...Sleeping Beauty.

This dark spin begins with the introduction of half-sisters, Aurora and Isabelle. Aurora is mute and cannot feel and Isabelle is blind. Their senses were taken for them at a young age from the fairies in exchange for other gifts. They grow up together, supporting each other, and even creating their own secret language. It comes time for Aurora to marry but her Prince is murdered. She then pricks her finger on a spinning wheel and is plunged into a dream world, leaving Isabelle to try to figure out a way to save her. Her mission is to find the prince's brother and have him wake her with true loves first kiss. Both girls are thrust into a world of danger, corruption, and adventure.

So I had to think about how I would rate this book quite a bit. My initial impression is less than captivated. However, I think the reason for this is because while I was listening to this book I happened to be going through quite a bit of dental work. I have a severe fear of the dentist, so I am afraid my brain seemed less impressed because of the situation I was in. One thing for sure is that I love the aesthetic of the story. It is dark and so magical. I really do love the characters. They have great development throughout, but the best part is their relationship with each other. They will stop at nothing to save each other and support each other and it really shines with the sister relationship. The only aspects I wasn't a fan of is the constant switching of the point-of-view. It slowed the pacing down and distracted me throughout the story. The other part is the mega-giant cliffhanger. I wanted some parts wrapped up at least, but it honestly just felt like it ended too abruptly. However, I will be purchasing the second book because I have to know what happens!

The narrator is spectacular. She is clear and displayed the proper emotion at appropriate times. Overall, I rate this book 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. If you love dark fantasy, you will enjoy this!

I tend to be pretty picky when it comes to memoirs, it really needs to grab my attention. Drinking From The Trough by Mary Carlson, narrated by Sara Morsey definitely caught my attention. This memoir is a veterinarian's memoir. I love animals so I was extremely excited to listen to this audiobook. The book goes through Mary Carlson's life as an animal owner and a veterinarian. There are many different animals and procedures discussed throughout the book! I love the stories about her husky named Kelly and her horse as well. This book is great for animal lovers!

One thing is for sure, the author has a huge heart. She often has problems getting too close to the animals that she has to work on. She always treats them kindly and respectfully. It is truly heartwarming. Her discussion on her education and training through Vet school is also entertaining as well and brings to light many things that many people would not think of when it comes to Vet school. It is just as extensive as medical school!

There are a couple of things that I feel could be improved. First of all, the story does jump around quite a bit. The timeline is a little fuzzy which causes some confusion. Especially when the author brings up the name of the animal who died in the previous chapter. The writing is also a little dry and slows the pacing a bit. You can tell the author has a passion for what she does, so that does help! However, this book is more about her life than her job as a vet.

The narrator does an excellent job as well. Everything is clear and enunciated. Overall, a great book for animal lovers or vets! I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

I saw this book sitting in a used bookstore and not only did the amazing cover capture my attention, so did the author’s name. Fun Fact: That is not her pen name. Her real last name is Slaughter. I had heard so many great things about Karin Slaughter’s books that I just had to get it. I am so glad I did! Not only is this book incredible, but I got to meet Karin Slaughter at the LA Times Festival of Books! The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter is a book about a truly heinous crime, family, and ultimately forgiveness. Samantha Quinn, Charlotte Quinn, and their mother are home when their house is invaded. The intruders are looking for their father, who is a defense lawyer. Things go south and the intruders turn their violence on the family that will leave them severely scarred for life. Twenty-eight years later, Charlotte is now a lawyer and finds herself in the middle of a tragedy involving a school shooting. All the memories from years ago come back to haunt her.

I could not write a full detailed synopsis because I do not want to give anything away. This book is terrifying, yet mesmerizing. Karin Slaughter weaves a suspenseful story that is just impossible to put down. My favorite aspect of the story is the sister relationship between Samantha and Charlotte. Being the oldest of 3 sisters, I could totally relate to some the complexities of their relationship.

However, I am still truly amazed at how the story came together with all the twists. I was not sure how the story would come together in the end, but it did and did so perfectly. I cannot wait to read more books by Karin Slaughter.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Be prepared, however, this book is extremely graphic and violent. If crime, mysteries, and thrillers are something you enjoy, then this is it!

Such a bittersweet moment. I am so excited to read the final installment of Beckoned, but now I am heartbroken that it is over.

BE PREPARED, ACCIDENTAL SPOILERS AHEAD!

Beckoned Part 6: Adrift in New Zealand by Aviva Vaughn brings back Soren in the final chapter. Last time, he found himself in Costa Rica after his heart is broken. By living in Costa Rica and not going home to help run the family business, he was cut off from the family funds. Soren meets some locals that truly help him find himself. However, there is no room for him there anymore and he must find his own way. An opportunity arises to start a hotel business in New Zealand. Little does he know that two people who once had a special place in his heart will be back. Some old feelings arise, but the situations are complicated. Soren will also to have to worry about fixing things with his family. Will he find happiness with his professional life, family life, and love life?

Now, I must say this: If you have not read the first five books of the Beckoned Series, please do so before this book. This book can be standalone, but I think it is critical to see how Soren develops over time. His character development is absolutely delightful. I have always been #TeamSoren but this last book made me fall even more in love with him. I love the idea that you have to find yourself before you love someone else. Until you truly love yourself, you will not be able to love fully and unconditionally.

There are plenty of wonderful new female characters and even some familiar faces. However, be prepared. There are twists that readers will not see coming. There were moments when I had tears streaming down my face. I have grown to love these characters so much. Overall I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars and even though it is a tough choice, it is probably my favorite in the series.

Thank you to the author, Aviva Vaughn for an advanced copy of the book! Beckoned Part 6 will be released May 16th!!

The Beatin’ Path by John B Lane is definitely an interesting book. It is a collection of essays, prose, and poetry that spans politics, religion, and society. The author wants his readers to follow the progress and not limit themselves to the boxes we built in our society. The book is broken up into three sections called, Are We Here Yet, Bullshit Doesn’t Age Well, and Make Things Better.

I enjoyed many different titles in this collection. For example, A Most Revolutionary Question, Everything Changes All The Time, Ignorance Will Not Be Ignored and Learning to Learn.

I do admire the author’s passion for thinking intelligently, progressively and honestly. He really wants the human race to stop what we are doing. We lie to better ourselves. But his question is how in the world does that make us better? The truth is it doesn’t. We are killing each other and our planet in the name of political parties or religion.

I must say this. This book is very anti-religion. I am the type of person that respects the beliefs of others (as long as you aren’t hurting anyone). If you are religious and are not a fan of conflicting arguments, then this book is not for you. I found there are a lot of repetitive ideas. The second section is quite slow because of this. However, I was intrigued by the author's arguments and honesty.

Overall I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Thank you, JKS Communications and John B Lane for a copy of the book!
