A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
5.0
Blog post: https://amysbooknook.co.uk/2021/03/21/a-court-of-mist-and-fury-by-sarah-j-mass-my-review/
A Court of Mist and Fury is the follow on to A Court of Thorns and Roses, and it’s not often I say this, but the sequel was so much better! Spoiler warning for ACOTAR! After Feyre helped bring down Amarantha and her reign, she is brought back to the Spring court with her new love, Tamlin, for her happy ever after. Unfortunately, there wasn’t actually any happiness in their ending. Tamlin grew too protective and began controlling Feyre to the point of madness. In her desperation to escape her new lover, Feyre is whisked away to the night court by Rhys. I wont go further into plot points here as I really don’t want to spoil too much for those who have never read the ACOTAR series. Instead, I will talk about the new characters introduced in this book.
Feyre is acquainted with the inner circle of the night court, and I truly loved every single character involved. From Rhys’ brothers in arms, Cassian and Azriel, to the wickedly delightful Amren, and beautifully strong and witty Morrigan, the inner circle has every personality trait that a well rounded group needs. The witty banter, and humour permeates from every page, and the relationships developed throughout this book between Feyre and each member of the inner court is just wonderful. I honestly fell in love with every single character, not to mention Rhysand himself, and his personal development and background story. The night court itself is rich and beautiful, and the history fascinating. I really enjoyed learning about the Illyrian camps, and the other types of Fae within the Night Court.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Feyre’s growth and development, especially in her trusting her own strength and abilities. And seeing her recovering from such traumatic events and overcoming her mental health issues was so empowering and beautifully written.
I think my only issue again with this book (and I’m really grasping at straws to find something I didn’t like) is that I still want to see more of Pyrnthian! We were introduced to the summer court, and I absolutely loved every page surrounding its history and the characters that are based there. I just want more information as Prynthian has truly peaked my interest, and I have fallen in love with the history of the world Sarah J. Mass has created!
Conclusion: This was a fantastic second novel in the ACOTAR series. The writing again was beautiful, the characters well developed and each personality so strong in their own way. Feyre’s development throughout this book was inspiring. The history of the night court was deep, rich, and full off incredible and heartbreaking stories. I honestly can’t wait to continue this series and find out more about Feyre’s story!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
4.0
Daughter of Smoke and Bone follows the story of Karou, a 17 year old art study residing in Prague. Karou is a seemingly normal girl, going to classes with her best friend Zuzana and visiting her local cafe, however it is quickly revealed that there is more to Karou than meets the eye. She speaks several languages, not all of them of human origin, and draws nothing but bizarre half human – half animal creatures, that couldn’t possibly be real….right?
Karou leads a double life, and it’s even more magical than you could ever imagine. Filled with other worldly creatures, and a completely unique magic system, Daughter of Smoke and Bone is unlike anything I have read before.
The beginning of this book completely enraptured me. It almost read as a contemporary from the first few pages, however, as you delved deeper into the words, references of bizarre magic systems, mythical creatures and otherworldly objects were thrown into the mix as if it were a completely ordinary occurrence. It had me furiously turning the pages just to find out what on Earth was going on!
There was only one aspect of this book that I really did struggle with, and that was the concept of an insta-love romance. I have always found that, to me, insta-love romances are unbelievable and I am unable to invest fully into the characters emotions and relationship. However this is simply a personal preference and if that is a trope that you enjoy, then I am sure you would love this book.
The depth of the world building in this novel was incredible and the story line had so many twists and turns that I had no idea what to expect. I will warn you now though, that this book ended on a massive cliff hanger that will have you reaching for the second book in the series as soon as you have finished.
Conclusion: This was a fantastic read and unlike anything I have read in the past. Laini Taylor’s world building was impeccable, her writing style devastatingly beautiful and her characters heart-warming yet overwhelmingly deep and rich.
