"Every house has a story to tell and a secret to share." With that opening line I was already intrigued by this story. It was more of a mystery with horror elements than a horror novel itself, and the direction that the last few chapters went, although surprising, kinda left me dissatisfied? Maybe it's my fault for expecting something else. Nonetheless, the book kept me hooked for the most part so I still recommend it!

Once again, Holly Jackson did not disappoint! I was so hooked by the mystery presented, and even though I was right about a few key elements to the mystery, nothing could prepare me for the last few chapters. I found myself holding on to my kindle, anxious for what was about to happen — much like how it was while i was reading As Good as Dead.

Bel's relationship with Rachel was so interesting to read about. I understand how Bel might annoy some people and be considered an irritating and unpleasant character, but for me it was exactly what made her interesting and easy to emphasize with. Her struggles made her who she is, and it's because of who she is that Bel was able to figure out the truth behind what really happened to her mother.

Holly Jackson said in the acknowledgments that this was the best book that she's written, and I might just have to agree with her on that.

reread notes

I have people on my side? What side? Am I unwittingly the face of the hoped-for rebellion? Has the mockingjay on my pin become a symbol of resistance?

in this book we see katniss start to come to terms with being the face of an uprising, but it's a revolution that it's only beginning and it goes far deeper than she knows. it definitely feels disheartening to think that you are in control of things, only to see yourself powerless, a pawn in others games and agendas.

reread through the audiobook version (which is absolutely fantastic) to get ready to finally finish this series after such a long time.

I'm glad I chose the audiobook for this, because it was such a good reading experience! The story was compelling as much as it was gruesome, and I was hooked at every chapter, wanting to know more about these characters.

By the end, I was a bit conflicted, because you're truly left feeling like you don't know who to believe. I don't take that as a bad a thing entirely, but I understand why some people would be disappointed by that. For me, the ending felt quite underwhelming, which is why I didn't give this a solid 5 star rating. But the narrative itself is very interesting and compels you to want to know more, so kudos to the author.

I definitely recommend the audiobook for anyone who wants to read this book! I look forward to reading more works from Lisa Jewell in the future.
