The first half is like frozen molasses, it is so slow, but the second half makes up for it! ❤️

The book holds up surprisingly well given the fact that it is nearly 60 years old. While the movies help bring the imagery and visualization of the books to life, the novel carries the subtlety, inner motivations, time, history, and layered political intrigue that are all interplaying together to guide the actions of the characters. The growth in Paul from start to finish was incredible. 💖

Much improved over the first in the series. Both characters had to work through their personal histories and trauma. The only unusual thing to me is the sheer concentration of gay men in this small town 🤣

Who knew I actually needed the angst in a romance novel to really enjoy it. There was virtually no conflict in the entire story so it felt like the literary equivalent to Walmart brand vanilla ice cream: like….im sure it’s fiiiiine, and it’s cheap and easy, but why would I pick it when anything else exists?

The spice scenes were actually quite well done, though there was virtually no character development. And despite being book 1 in a series I feel like this must be the spin off of a separate series because there are SO MANY hyper specific references to events for Josh and Gabe (side characters in this novel) that happened prior to it. So that was frustrating.

Also, no one says “Bawdy” not out loud and not in their inner voice, please don’t call sexy innuendo “bawdy language.” Overall this one was a miss and I probably should have DNFd.

Where the first Novella was more of a flash fiction of monster smut, this is a lovely balance of both meaningful plot and deeply exciting spice. I can’t wait to read more of Rowan’s works!
