For fans of Crying in H Mart this one will dig even deeper.
It felt like an eulogy for a mother while trying to reconnect with a father.
The last part was so beautiful and a rollercoaster of emotions that made my change my initial rating.
It made me think of my own family and how I should be more thankful even though sometimes you just can’t help arguing.
The development of Chow’s father throughout the narrative touched me even though sometimes I too felt like screaming at him.
Beautiful, thoughtful, raw memoir.

The premise of the book really caught my attention and from start to ending I didn’t know where the story would go.
It was the first book I ever read that deals with the adoption subject and it was quite eye opening in many ways.
This book is so different from anything I’ve read before. Very original but also bonkers. As I said it felt like a feverish dream but in the end it all made sense in its own craziness.

I wish I had read the author’s note before reading the book, now it makes more sense.
The mermaid of Jeju is a beautiful, heartfelt and mystical story. A homage to Jeju and the women divers, but so much more than just that.
I need to comeback to this story another time with a new knowledge and a different view. I’m sure my feelings towards it will change.

No idea this would be my first read of the year, no idea I’d actually enjoy it enough to rate it 4 stars.
The first half of the book felt a bit childish and all over the place but boy what a major turn on the second half.
You see the main characters development in such a beautiful but also cruel way.
Jude really turned out to be a badass and I’m excited to see where the story goes.
After 70% I just couldn’t put it down. It’s definitely a bit slow paced in the beginning but totally worth it for what’s to come.
A great book to start my reading year!

Definitely recommend to everyone who wishes to know more about the hermit kingdom that is North Korea
Unfortunately Sweet Bean Paste was not for me. Although at first I was enjoying it, I felt bored throughout the book.
I also think it had to do with the translation, most of the time the dialogue seemed so dull.
Will watch the movie regardless.

A book where nothing really major happens, quite predictable, very small dialogue but extensive descriptions of the conflict between China and Japan over domination of the Korean Peninsula.
It wasn’t my cup of tea at least the slow burning plot. I didn’t create any type of bond with the main character and towards the end was already forcing myself to read. It’s safe to say it wasn’t good but also not that bad.
I love Kyung Shook Shin’s writing but The Court Dancer didn’t feel like it was written by the same author.

As I finished The Kiss of Deception I was struggling with which rating I should give, being torn between 3 and 4 stars.
For me the beginning was really strong, I was fully captivated by the plot and the characters. It was exciting trying to find who was the prince and who was the assassin
Very interesting to see how much influence language has and can be a way to manipulate someone’s feelings or actions. I’ve definitely felt personally attacked in some cases.
I think everyone in some way or another has been a “cult victim” whether you want to feel a part of something or make a change.
From Jonestown massacre to fitness gurus this book has a wide rage of examples on how language plays a crucial role without you even noticing the lure.
I just felt like at times it felt quite repetitive but overall I think the author made a fantastic research job with this book.
