The imagery in this book (not just the paintings included) really makes it for me. The mood and atmosphere are fantastic for fall/spooky season. The story itself was pretty solid, and the characters for the most part did what they needed to do. But I am much more into this for the vibes.
The characterization of the main character is what sank this book for me. I get that she was supposed to be naive about feelings, but it was infuriating to see something be laid out plain but it took her an extra couple chapters to catch up. Top notch world building, though.
This is fun and has a strong voice, but I wish we had followed the girl that had been possessed.
This is a sleepover of a book, if that makes sense. You get the warm and fuzzies of being with your closest friends and gossiping about your crushes. The characters are delightful, especially our main. She has the spunk you would expect, but strong layers and heart to go with it. If you need a pick me up and a quaint, charming story of found family, this is absolutely the pick.
I love me a "good for her" kind of book, but I feel that this failed to deliver that premise completely. I want the main character to be more aware of her faults, because that makes for a more compelling tale. If not her, then at least the story itself. The first twist got me good, and I was invested, but everything after that was very predictable.
I heard so many good things about this book, and I think there was way, way too much hype around it. Not a single person was likable. Lily's back story was the only compelling part, and that's over in the first few chapters. Every twist was utterly predictable. I can't overstate how disappointed I am. I will not be picking up the sequel.
