I read this series to get a better idea of Fuji’s work while reading Chainsaw Man. I think that’s shaped my perspective while reading this. The series is a lot more experimental. CSM has a lot more polish, but that doesn’t mean this is bad, some of the rawness of this series feels almost more human and impactful. The themes of humanity’s self-destruction and the love of family are similar to themes in Fuji’s later works but they’re expressed here with less subtlety and I appreciate that a bit. For a magic apocalyptic story having very human elements grounds it very well.

Reading this now makes me realize how much I’ve grown since I first read it 5 years ago for school.

Still crazy how much holds true now for a predictive book written in the 60s. I feel like it’s still an insightful book.
