Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

Crying in H Mart was exactly what I needed in this moment. Zauner's story about caring for her mother during her last few months has helped me process my own mother's sudden death. While I wasn't her caretaker and there was no indication that she was dying, I connected with the emotions I felt (and still feel).

The reason I'm giving this book four out of five stars is because I wanted more food. Though food memories are sprinkled throughout each chapter, it isn't until chapter sixteen that food has a stronger focus. Chapter 18, Maangchi and Me is the best food-focused chapter. Zauner's descriptions of her kitchen and making two kinds of kimchi are the moments I sought earlier in the book. That being said, I enjoyed the book overall. Zauner's writing style kept me engaged and I could clearly see the places and memories she described.

Though the characters were predictable, the research that went into The Kitchen Front in regards to food rationing during WWII made the book come to life. While I can't imagine using some of these ingredients, the ingenuity of the women to create dishes was masterful.
