Holy hell! That was a wild ride. So many twists and turns and so much action. It was creepy and spooky and I had a great time reading it. I’m a sucker for an ending that leaves you going “.....WHAT!?”
Ooh boy that was intense. I am exhausted now but I’m also itching to pick up the next one. aaaAAAHHH
Gosh, this had such an incredible ending. Without spoiling it, I will say that it's everything I could've asked for and more.
I started listening to the audio book about halfway through, and I really wish I’d listened to the whole thing. Hearing the essays told by Ross Gay himself adds a sense of personality I hadn’t gotten during the first half of the book—although the writing has a ton of personality and charm on its own. It was an easy book to pick up and read a few pages of when I had the time to. Really brightened my day a few times and made me think about how I experience the word on a daily basis a bit differently. I hope to someday have the same cheery yet realistic disposition Gay seems to portray through his writing.
This is one of my absolute favorite books of all time. Everything about it, from the characters to their stories is so beyond beautiful to me. I actually wrote one of my supplemental essays for a college application about this book. The prompt was basically asking for a book recommendation and I just knew I had to use this one. There are most likely over 100 tabs in my copy at this point. Thank you Abdi Nazemian for writing this story and sharing it with the world.
A simple yet heartwarming story about family, heartbreak, love, and thrift shopping.
If I wasn’t so tired I’d start the second one immediately. Oh my lord...
18 minutes earlier and I would’ve finished this book in one day! Yes, it is midnight thirty and yes, I am deeply in love with every character that Aiden Thomas had brought to life (well, most of them) in these pages. As a trans guy, Yadriel’s character really resonated with me despite the differences between us culturally. He is this brave, anxious, hilarious guy and I want to emulate those characteristics when I am officially out (especially when I’m out to my family who “isn’t transphobic but...”). This book for real has me on the edge of my seat. I absolutely CANNOT wait to see what else Aiden Thomas has in store!
Based on the last two five star reviews I’ve given, I’ve found that my favorite type (or one of my favorite types) of books is a story of multiple characters, who seemingly have nothing to do with each other, coming together and doing some badass stuff. I especially love it when the ending is unsatisfactory or leaves room for a lot of interpretation.
The Prey of Gods is absolutely incredible and I was hooked from, quite literally, the first page. It was action packed and hilarious. And the queer rep was just *chef’s kiss*. I’m a fan of weird/unconventional uses of imagery and language, so if you’re also into that I think you’ll be fascinated with Drayden’s storytelling in the same way that I am. Really excited to read more of her work.
