for what this tries to be—a scathing satire erotica about the state of the world that ridicules terrible people— it really succeeded. and I had a horrible/great time
that being said there is no way this is getting above 3 stars, it is delightfully unserious
I was waiting the whole time for some kind of reason or connection that makes this about Persephone/Hades but I never found it. There isn’t much that connects this to the original material besides constant pomegranate mentions and an indecipherable family tree. It’s basically just a Mafia romance with gay people involved. And a lot of the conflicts are just made up and insta solved, which is frustrating to read over and over.
The romance didn’t quite work for me, and to be honest their dynamic made me uncomfortable at times. I had a lot of criticisms while reading this— at the end of the day it was just alright. I’ll probably read more of this series just because i’ve already invested time in getting to know the characters.
Actually phenomenal. Vandermeer’s writing has such a visceral and intimate quality to it, while still maintaining enough distance to build a kind of tense anticipation. This book may even top the first one imo, the way it builds and feeds itself to you as you read; immovable from its course and horrifying to watch inching closer.
