The Time of Our Singing by Richard Powers

Though it took me two attempts to get through it (600 + pages is a lot of pages), this book was so worth my time. Especially interesting to read a book about mixed race characters with the backdrop of the civil rights movement during the 2008 presidential election.
The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon

I'm a sucker for anything noir-ish with a fast talking, fucked up detective in it. Chabon puts a nice twist on the genre.
This Common Secret: My Journey as an Abortion Doctor by Susan Wicklund, Alan Kesselheim

After the first few pages, I wasn't sure I'd be able to stomach the sadness in this book, but I'm really glad I soldiered through. Dr Wicklund's re-telling of her experiences as an abortion doctor are powerful and engaging. As a woman who lives in the bubble of New York City, its liberal attitudes, and within progressive communities, I've never had direct contact with the tales in this book about the horrendous treatment American abortion doctors have received.
Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk

For me, reading Palahniuk is like reading Charles Bukowski: I keep giving it a try because so many people gush about his books and I appreciate a good turn of phrase, but ultimately his work is pretty forgettable. Or, it tries to be really crazy and jarring and leaves me feeling kinda meh anyway.
