I don’t often read poetry, but this book tore at my soft spots, just as much as it soothed them. The art and the poetry created beautiful layers of emotion that twined with mythology.
Every page of this book struck me in the chest and I would recommend readers both experienced in poetry and new to the format try reading this.
It might be easier to name the things I like about this book than what I did not like because the answer is, I didn’t particularly like anything. I am an avid horror connoisseur, especially slashers. The art style was unpleasant to look and the story was bland and lacking in intersection.
The characters lacked dimension. The story seemed to be a critique of misogyny in horror, but instead did the exact thing it was meaning to avoid.
Honestly, at the end of the day the graphic novel had the depth of a puddle on a hot day.
Lucky Girl is a fun, short Krampus Christmas horror novella. The story was short and fun. The creepy parts of the novella were well done sticking with you as you continue the story. The depth of the characters was lacking but with only a little over 100 pages that's understandable.
If you are looking for a short and sweet horror novella, I'd recommend this Christmas romp.
Where Darkness Blooms centers the story of four girls trying to uncover the mystery of what happened to their mothers in a town that craves their end. Bo, Delilah, Jude, and Whitney have each processed and struggled with the loss of their mothers in different ways.
The story is one of generational trauma and the acknowledgment that "good" men are often complacent in the violence that other men perpetuate. The bones of the story are fascinating but the execution could have been improved. Overall, I enjoyed the book and think it is worth the read.
I enjoyed the prose of the book but felt it dragged in places. This was evident in action scenes, particularly where the action was interrupted by introspection and exposition. The use of four points of view in the book did mean none of the girls were as well developed as I would have liked.
