The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall
4.0
This book tells the story of a polygamist family in 1979 by focusing on three of its members: Golden (the Husband/Father), Trish (the 4th Wife), and Rusty (one of the sons).
It's a long read, but captivating. Humorous at times, but increasingly heartbreaking the deeper into the plot you go. Alternating between backstory and present-day, you get a full, fascinating picture into the chaos, love, frustration, togetherness, and loneliness of a large, multi-pronged family unit.

Mr. Citizen by Harry Truman
4.0
I've long been interested in the Presidency and life of Harry Truman, but only recently got around to doing anything about that interest. Truman has a few different memoirs, but I chose this one because from what I read, "Mr. Citizen" was the only one that wasn't heavily ghostwritten. It focused primarily on his life after the Presidency, which was a good start for me. If I continue down this path I think I'll choose a biography for the next one.
Overall, I enjoyed this -- it's a little dense and wordy for a man who was famous for using simple words, but I know that's a product of the times. And I wish it had been a bit more about what his life was like rather than him just sharing opinions of how things ought to be. But, his book, his rules, I guess. Oh, Harry.

The Book of Joe by Jonathan Tropper
4.0
I really enjoyed this one. Joe is not a very like-able character, but I think that's sort of the point. He's a jaded, selfish, lonely jerk. He knows it, and he doesn't know how to stop being that way. He's also written a tell-all book about his hometown, the people in it, and specific events from his senior year of high school.
The story got better and better the more I read. This book tackles some heavy issues in a raw, emotional way, and it was a wonderful read.

Carved in Stone by Vickie Taylor

I finally talked my book club into reading a romance novel. Oh, snap. It was about gargoyles. It was like a super erotic version of that cartoon "Gargoyles". OH SNAP.
