Did not finish book. Stopped at 48%.
This one’s going in the DNF pile. I found this on a local authors table at my B&N; I want so badly to love it. I just don’t. The concept and overall plot is 10/10 up my alley. The pacing is crawling for me, and I can’t get myself to finish it. The other issue I’m having is the lack of detail with the world building. Some of the scenes are hard to follow because we just don’t get enough info.

I know this is being trad published and I’m hoping it gets a little polishing to help these issues. I also hope for an audiobook. I think my experience would be so much better via audio vs eyeballs; I would retry this one via audiobook if it gets made.

I’m impressed with this book. It’s a dark YA fantasy with one of the most easy to hate rulers/fathers I’ve read in some time. The magic portfolio is interesting overall with the FMC’s magic being even more so. Mancella is an achievement of a character. Her staunch difference between who she is and who she’s expected to be, her ability to push back against her oppressive father, and her humility that allows her to give chances when she has over ever been used makes her so interesting to read. Silver feels more simple to me and compliments Mancella so well. The epilogue: So smart and has my mind trying to anticipate what could happen next long after I’ve finished reading.

The overall pacing was so good. Every detail felt very intentional with very little, if any, wasted words. The audiobook narrators were excellent. I always appreciate having separate narrators for each POV - thank you for that! The narrators add to the story and don’t detract from it. Pacing of the narration was also good. I really enjoyed this read/listen.

Thank you NetGalley, D.L. Taylor, and Macmillan audio for this audiobook ARC.

This book has good information presented in a digestible way. It’s short and concise. It offers perspective to ponder about why anyone thinks the way they do re: money and finances. I wouldn’t call it comprehensive - for example, societal gender roles aren’t touched on much at all.

This is my second read through of this one. I do think it would be beneficial to put out an updated version anytime from here on out. The base of the info is solid and generally will be for time to come (as is the intention of the book) but it does read dated at times.

I have the audiobook for this and find it to be an easy, very quick listen. I pull it out sometimes when I want to listen to a podcast but can’t handle dealing with the commercials.
