aren is a king who prioritizes the interests of his people first and so is lara, she wants to help her people as much as she can.

tbh all the characters in this book are badass except silas, i hope this book has a map that helps my imagination especially when the author brings up those random islands, i was lowkey lost...

and last thing i gotta say the political stuff in this book is super tense, complicated, and actually really interesting, that’s what made me give it 5 stars, no doubt 🙂‍↕️

i have no idea what happened in Romania 36 years ago and this book explains it in great detail with easy to understand writing and i get goosebumps every time i read it even though i've guessed some of the people were informers it still freaks me out because what bunu said that no one can be trusted is real, also I like the photographs that the author included it makes this book even more perfect

i gotta admit i like this book but it’s not perfect.

fuchai’s character is super grey — kinda stuck between good and evil (tbh he’s just an idiot) and for some reason when xishi said she hated him, it didn’t really feel like she meant it?

i have zero thoughts on fanli, he’s attractive sure but also dumb as hell and maybe bc he was too focused on serving kingdom and he only trained xishi for a few days then parted ways w her so i didn't feel like he was fckin really in love w her? that's why i felt like i needed dual pov.

the only character i actually love is zhengdan but ann ling barely gives her any spotlight, as for xishi... she’s kinda iconic for seducing the dumb king but that’s literally her only skill.

the last thing i don't like is the ending if it was made angst i'm sure there's a more reasonable ending
