Writing style intentionally mimics the way folklore is orally told, rather than the way novels are typically written - this can take a little getting used to, but it's worth it. (It feels odd, almost choppy, but once you understand the intention, it's very good)

It took me several weeks to finish this - with lots of time in between readings. That isn't to say it isn't good, it just took until the last 50 pages to really hook me.
Moderate: Abandonment, Alcohol, Death, Death of parent, and Murder
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
3.0
I'm not a fan of books written in dialect - I find that the struggle to understand the dialogue takes away from the book. That said, you can't argue with the amazing characters that Hurston created. She tackles the big questions of class, race, gender roles, and what it means to be human - black or white. I probably wouldn't have read it if it wasn't an assigned novel in class, but I'm certainly glad I did.

DNF - there isn't anything specifically *bad* about this book, but it was slow and never caught my attention. I am sure it was me, and not the novel, but life is too short and filled with books to read.
