one of the best debuts I’ve read in years tbh—the plot isn’t a new concept of any means but god does Mellors bring a new light to it

In the spirit of trying not to be a major hater, I won't go into serious detail but will leave you with this one sentence thought by our MC that I cannot erase from my mind: "I had to be a Frozen character in the moment and just...let it go. "

In what world would a 17-year-old girl reference a Disney movie in their internal dialogue? I feel like YA dialogue can be so hit or miss, and this book was the latter. There are many more examples, but again trying not to be a #hater.

Thanks to the publisher for the ARC!!

I have had better chemistry with the guy who runs my local bodega than the two MCs did in this book

fantasy books where the excessive world building takes over the reading experience will always be a thorn in my side. most of the time I can get past it, but if I’m still having to reference fan made glossaries (god did this need one of those) in the last 100 pages something’s not right. cool concept but just didn’t land for me

my copy from the library had three random bookmarks left in it from previous readers who DNF’d this and if the writing in this wasn’t so god damn pretty it would been four — took me almost five months to finish btw in case anyone was wondering

As a seasoned veteran of the romance genre (imagine me saluting here) this was my hardest battle, I mean book, yet. The repeated lines of "blue eyes like the ocean" (10+ times), "his broad shoulders" (20+), the fact we do not get to Spain until the 50% mark (baby, it's called THE SPANISH LOVE DECEPTION), and how the 3rd act conflict happened at the 94% mark (ah yes, a random cancer subplot), and little to no character development was so utterly mind-boggling I had to put this down several times to punch the goddamn air.

I will leave you with one quote that had me cringing so hard internally that I think my organs moved: "'Have I forgiven Zayn Malik?' Rosie shook her head, snickering. 'Oh, Lord knows you haven’t.'"

~and scene!~

Is this book a literary masterpiece? No! But is it unhinged fun that I’m embarrassed to admit I enjoyed? Abso-fucking-lutely!

Such an interesting concept, that ultimately falls flat due to the pacing of the novel. If the games were introduced earlier (and hear me out a little more bloody) this would've been a higher rated read for me, but by the time we got to the competition, my mind was elsewhere (read: Allister Lowe and Allister Lowe only).

It's so unbelievably rare for your favorite childhood books to hold up, but god, this series does. Sure, some of the language and jokes at times can be a bit dated/inappropriate, but Rennison just wrote how I like to believe, at times, all 14-year-old girls can be: a mix of selfishness, crush-obsessed, and a whole lot of self-reflection. In a way, Georgia Nicolson is so iconic because she doesn't try to be "not like other girls." She just simply is like other girls, a character that's just too easy to relate to.

In short: there isn't another book like this one, and I don't think I'll ever find it. Ace gang 4ever and ever <3
