Finally got around to reading this. The first half was so tedious but after awhile I fell into its rhythm. I’m sort of glad I didn’t read this in high school because I’m not sure I would have totally gotten it- I know a lot of high schoolers related to it because of its angst but I suppose the ironic part is that the “coming of age” is Holden shedding that cynicism in the end

Literally everyone I talk to LOVES this book and I’m mad with myself that I don’t get it. This book bored me throughout the first half and the second half was predictable. There were lots of metaphors- some in your face, some subtle but uninteresting. I thought the plot was unique and the last chapter was emotional, however the pacing issues and lack of any real rise or fall in the story ultimately left me unsatisfied. I feel like this could have been a better short story or novella.

Wtf did I just read!?!? I had no idea what was going on half the time and somehow in the last third of the book everything fell together in an implosion of plot twists. I think Muir is some kind of genius to write something so bizarre and dark yet funny and lovable all at the same time. I have never read anything like Gideon the Ninth or Harrow the Ninth and I still am at a loss on how I’m supposed to comprehend all that I just read!
