I loved Opals character and how she jumped into things wholeheartedly. Granted it didn’t always work but she was relatable. Her ADHD rep was spot on and I loved her more for it. And I can’t forget grumpy, (not-so) little Pepper. I can’t speak for how relatable the autism rep is but I felt like her perceptions and her triggers were explained to the point that anyone could understand where she was coming from and why it impacted her the way it did.
I feel like I only made it to 60% by skipping through a lot of the spicy scenes. Many of the spicy scenes seemed randomly inserted (like most of the fingers and "appendages") just for shock value. The spice didn’t really move the plot forward or deepen our understanding of the characters. The aftercare scenes barely moved it forward and that would have been a great opportunity imo. I really think the duet could have been condensed into one book, which would have allowed the author to focus more on scenes that provided solid character development or advanced the plot. This would have made the narrative less repetitive and allowed a stronger connection to the characters.
Only below 4 stars for that 3rd act break up trope. Otherwise, this one continued the ramp up to spicier scenes, and was super cute. It was great to see the last chapter leave everyone with a HFN (or maybe HEA if you're an optimist lol). I'll definitely be looking to add this one to the trophy collection eventually.
5 stars The rest of this review will be pointed at my friends and followers who've read This Is How You Lose the Time War.
I honestly didn't think that I would find another story that hit me with the kind of mind-fuckery that we experienced with Time War. It's different enough that you won't feel like you're reading someone else's attempt at Time War, but it definitely gave me that same "wait a second... Hold on, let me restart this entire book and take in everything I missed" feeling.
In Universes is very character-driven and follows the story of Raffi. We meet them in an array of lives and universes where their world and story has split off based on possibilities and choices that change their life and their relationships. We see their circle of friends as friends, lovers, and enemies as we experience a new universe in every chapter.
North's writing style was incredible, making reading this easy and interesting. I did receive a completed copy of this from the Publisher; however, I listened to the audio version from my library, and it made me wish that I had slowed down to really revel in the first listen of this story. I will definitely be going back to this when I need a pallet cleanser since this is so unlike all of my other reads.
Initial Review: I'm gonna need a minute with this one. 🤯
