This Is How You Lose the Time War by Max Gladstone, Amal El-Mohtar

An easy five stars. This book broke me and put me back together.

"I love you. I love you. I love you. I’ll write it in waves. In skies. In my heart. You’ll never see, but you will know. I’ll be all the poets, I’ll kill them all and take each one’s place in turn, and every time love’s written in all the strands it will be to you."

This is such a mastery of craft and a story in a league of its own. Despite being absolutely enormous in scope and told only through small windows of time and place, it is immediately immersive. The writing is lyrical and beautiful without sacrificing pace or plot, and the unfolding of Red and Blue’s love for one another is so painfully human, though they themselves are not. I never wanted it to end, and will undoubtedly be carrying this story with me for a very long time.

As per usual, Lillian Lark made me fall in love with the coziest cinnamon roll monster babies

Was expecting demon smut and I got catharsis?? Was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. My own sleep paralysis is slightly less horrifying now.

Holy fucking god.
Eerie, dreamlike and devastating. My heart is absolutely shredded in thirty pages and I would have read three-hundred just to torture myself a bit longer.

Full of gorgeous, lyrical prose and quotable snippets, but only one brought me to tears:
"They will never sing my name."

Written with the pensive poeticism of a recalled dream — hazy, haunting, and familiar.

"And you don’t feel something alive in books? Haven’t you ever felt the kiss of fabled winds brush across your face?" Lęina whispered. "Haven’t you ever found yourself floating in a infinite space?"

A witty voice, immersive world, compelling story and charming characters. I love Ellie as a main character + her healthy, supportive relationships with her family and friends.

Poignant, honest, and expertly crafted.

"I have been woman
for a long time
beware my smile
I am treacherous with old magic
and the moon’s new fury
with all your wide futures
promised
I am
woman
and not white.
