An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena

If you love a good "who done it" book then I would definitely recommend reading this! I feel like there are a lot of these types of books but the author definitely was able to put her own twist on it! I feel like I have a pretty good idea of who it's always going to be when I read a book but I had NO idea who was doing the killings until the last 30 pages.
What I love most about this book though is the characters.... they weren't boring and I think that's what made this book so good! When I can relate or hate one of the characters I feel like my interests are being pulled in without even knowing it!
Great and easy read!

So I was NOT expecting this book to be SO dang good.... I love dystopia type of books, and that was kind what this was but with a human trafficking aspect to it as well.
I love deep and dark and dangerous books because they are entertaining and they make me feel something... like stuff like this can actually happen so it's interesting to try and relate to it.
I can't even describe this book without giving it away all I know is the author did a great job at telling this story and describing the characters. I loved all the main ones and despised the ones I was supposed to.
Definitely read this book, now... you will NOT guess what happens!

This book was CRAZY! It's not like any other books you have read and it is VERY suspenseful. This is young adult fiction so it is an easy read. The characters annoy me at times but overall I love them and I love how they love each other. I believe there are 5 other books and I am just shocked about how much more there is to read about on their journey. I am always scared these boys are going to get caught but that's what makes this book so thrilling! I am going to buy the next book soon and I am most likely going to finish it in one sitting!
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

IT'S BOOK O'CLOCK!!!
The reason I say this is because after reading this book I decided to run down to the bookstore and purchase the other two (Kinda like buy one get one on happy hour) and indulge in those!
My taste is books are pretty simple yet very picky on the genre I am reading. This is considered a Young Adult book and I definitely agree, but it does show some more advanced types of writing that make it more enjoyable for adults. This book has lots of love and mystery in it as well, which I think are a GREAT combination.
DESCRIPTION (NO SPOILERS)
This book starts off with a tragedy that happened to Mara, where a group of her friends has died and she survived. Her family moves to start a new life but strange things keep happening to Mara such as she thinks things and they happen, and these things are usually negative or bad thoughts. She also has very vivid dreams of past times that has nothing to do with her, "so to speak." She meets some friends but also a boy named Noah, who is a bad boy and very attractive but he seems very arrogant and standoffish. They end up hanging out together quite some time and dealing with events that are happening. Around the end of the story Mara and Noah have an idea what is happening to Mara and Noah shares some similar "powers" This book contains lots of psychological and mental battles as well as kidnapping and shootings.
It's really hard to give a description of this book without giving away lots of the details that makes this book exciting!
This is the FIRST book in the trilogy so make sure to read this one first! But there is also a book called The Becoming of Noah Shaw.
CHARACTERS
Overall I think Michelle did well on the characters in this book especially her ex boyfriend Jude. Throughout the series you have very crazy emotions on how you will feel about him. Mara can be a little annoying at times but overall I like how her fear doesn't cripple her. I love Noah's character on how he is strong and soft but doesn't care of the bad mojo that surrounds Mara. I really enjoy that closeness she has with her brothers as well as her friend from school!
What I hated?
I can't really say I HATED anything in this book but what made it difficult to read and understand sometimes was the dream or "flashbacks" she had that was from a completely different time. Throughout the rest of the book I started enjoying them more because more clues were coming out of it but man was it boring to read at first haha.
What I loved?
Honestly I loved it all but my favorite part about this book is when the love between Mara and Noah starts, I am a SUCKERS of that kind of stuff and it makes you feel all tingly. This isn't my favorite book in the series because the other ones get so much better but it's a great read and it's a TRILOGY so you get to learn more about the characters and their backgrounds.

Have you ever heard of the movie Monster House? Well this is very similar but honestly way better!
Im not gonna lie, I think what I loved most about this book was the characters, especially Delilah! Most horror movies have the annoying girl that does stupid stuff and is the the cute girl that gets noticed by the popular guy? NO. Delilah is a popular girl with a twisted yet awesome mind and doesn't care what anyone else things. She's brave and hardheaded and honestly I felt like I really could relate to her. I really liked Gavin too, and the cute little romance butterflies definitely occurred for me!
Overall it wasn't super scary, just very suspenseful or more mysterious!

VERY QUICK READ BUT VERY WORTH IT
I decided to read this book because it had outstanding reviews and I wanted to try a different genre that wasn't my usual horror or romance novel. I started into this book not excited at all but once I finished it, it took my breathe away.
DESCRIPTION (NO SPOILERS)
This book is about gangs and how business is held on the streets when someone they loved gets murdered. Usually, a family member or friend will "take care" of the person who did it and ends up just being a mary-go-round of killings. So this young kid named Will is on his way to kill the person he believes murdered his brother Shawn. On the way down in the elevator on every floor he is visited by family and friends that have all died from either revenge or even getting caught in the crossfire. To me it takes on a ghosts of christmas past vibe so that Will ends up making the right decision. The end just abruptly ends but it leaves you very raw.
What I hated?
What made this book SO difficult to read was the type of style it was written but also the language and the way the main character talked. I understand why the author did it this way because it made the situation more real and put you inside the characters head. The tone to me was "gangster" or someone who didn't grow up with much education.
What I loved?
To me the best part is halfway through the book to the part when he gets visited in the elevator. You meet all these people that have passed away in Will's short life and their story on how they died. It's inspiring and sad and heartwarming all at the same time. AND LET ME TELL YOU. The end of this book was a mind shattering. I won't spoil it but Will has a big decision to make at the end of this stop to the ground level.

I enjoyed this book, it was a very easy read and the killer did end up surprising me even though I somewhat knew what the connection would be. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 was because I didn't like the characters at all except for Meg. Minnie was the worst of them all and you never really got to learn much about the other characters which would have been nice.
Overall it was a quick and fun read and I think the end had lots of thrilling twists and turns and was a lot more violent then anticipated for a young adult book!

I would describe this book as a young adult mystery, and I would say this book is pretty unique!
I love Kate and how mature she seems, but it of course she does a lot of dangerous things that get her into a little trouble in the end.
I like how the author made us keep guessing on who the killer was because it wasn't obvious at all.
The only thing that was kind of hard was trying to distinguish the group of boys as individuals because I did get a little lost when they talked about them and what they were doing.
Of course with young adult books they try and put a small romance in it and I loved it honestly. I think the author made a good point about how Kate only saw popularity and didn't even give the boys a chance until she saw it from his point of view.
Great mystery book and easy read!

This is a close 2ND to my all-time favorite book in erotic romance. In this book I don't really care for how quickly they fell in love, even though it does happen like that sometimes. I HATED Gideon in this book because he didn't show the same love and affection right away and to me seemed like a "player"BUT I was wrong and this is just the beginning of a journey through their lives!
