What an adventure!
Despite the narrator telling you from the start that happy endings don't exist and good natured forgiving people are as rare as unicorns... there are still many surprises I should've seen coming.
Loved all the action, I loved all the characters, especially the ones I didn't like at first and then 'huh, I misjudged you'.
Goes without saying, I'll be buying the next one as soon as pay day comes around.
Also, whoever said this is like Harry Potter but with more killing, is preaching to the wrong audience. The only similarities are that they're both in a school, that's it. Everything else is unique, with a rich world to explore and no niceties, and coincidences.

First book of 2022 and it was so so close to becoming 4 stars.
There are enough shocks and curiosities to keep you interested and reading. I loved the idea of a tribe of 'broken', living beneath the ice. This kind of weird scenario of humanity struggling to survive in harsh icy conditions, whilst the rejected have warmth and shelter (accompanied with lots of danger and lack of food).
However, the last 80 or so pages got very, for lack of a better word, anime. They weren't bad, but suddenly characters were doing things they couldn't before, and Yaz (the lead) got "exhausted of all energy" at least 5 times, but still managed to find enough energy from somewhere each time to pull a miracle out.
Saying this... I'm still going to read the next book. The world is too interesting to not know where its going.
It's just a shame that the last few chapters felt off, with a clumsy resolution.

Mark Lawrence has a talent for writing first lines that demand you keep reading. I've seen it in all his books so far.
Anyway, Red Sister, the martial sisters of the Sweet Mercy, follows Nona, a child who has been whisked away from a sentence of beheading, to join a convent... of deadly nuns you don't want to mess with.
As well as prayers, discipline, and patience, these young girls will learn to fight with fist and blade, or weild powerful magics.
I go could go on more about the world, but that will take a while. There is a rich world to discover here, a lot of world building that has me wanting to explore further.
Plot wise, it can be a little slow. It's a coming of age story, relationships between characters established, and lots of setup for the next two books.
I loved getting to know all the characters, and so looking forward to the next book. The packing didn't speed up until the last 20%, but boy did it speed up, AND THAT EPILOGUE!?
Only reason it's not 5 stars is because I personally feel this trilogy should be one book. I don't think the story here is self contained, and it's like I got half the story, and the other half are in the next two books.
