From the first 2 chapters, I knew I would be enjoying this book and that's very important for me. If it doesn't grip me than it becomes a slow slosh, I'll still finish the book (never let it be said that I don't finish what I start), but boy I've been through some bookswamps in the past.
Anyway, you want to hear about this book, not those.
Loved the main character Ben, an average guy you can tell from his thoughts that life was pretty normal (a "I'm bored with my job, but thats life... right?" kind of normal) so it's instantly easy to relate for a lot of us. What proceeds can only be described as an Odyssey, a journey, a dreamscape of Don Quixote.
With all the mashups of flashbacks mixed between strange events, it is surprisingly well paced and I was never left confused as to where I was taken to. I grew to know Ben really well and the author (Drew Magary) did what I love love when authors do, and that is show us the character growing, developing, he isn't just flung around life till it fixes itself, but we see this growth as real as the dogfaces and friendly giants.
I felt myself applauding Ben at the end, nudging his chin and going "that's my boy, you've come so far"
However it's not just Ben I've fallen in love, but Crab and his cynical outlook on everything, Fermona who will eat you with a smile (so so friendly), Cisco, how could I forget Cisco.
So I applaud Drew Magary, I'm definitely getting Portmortal right this very moment, so should you, hope this review has been helpful.
Oh and my thoughts on the ending *SPOILER* I think yes, yes they did. 😁
