Excuse me while I sob for the next 3-4 business days. One of the best books I've read this year. A gorgeous queer love story that is equal parts touching and devastating. What it's like to love someone at the wrong time. Exceptionally done and handled with care. Highly recommend the audiobook.

Thank you so much to Libro.fm for providing me the audio.

Unbelievably camp! This is for people that like to have fun! Gossip and cheeky jokes and suburban moms and possession and wine. I do wish we had the opportunity to get to know all the suburban moms on a more personal level but that didn’t take away from my reading experience. This book doesn’t take itself too seriously and you shouldn’t either. Have a good time with it and enjoy how perfectly ridiculous this is!

This was such an excellent book. I have not read The Island of Dr. Moreau but that did not take away from anything in this. Part historical fiction, part sci-fi, and some mystery - many genres spun into a magical, slow burn story that we expect from Silvia Moreno-Garcia.  And nobody is doing it like her. I loved the setting of this against 19th century Mexico. Garcia’s writing is immersive and captivating, it’s impossible not to be put under its spell. There’s a lot of layers here and I don’t want to give too much away, but I think it all REALLY works. Going into the book without much knowledge of its synopsis or any knowledge of the source material made this reading experience surprising and exhilarating. I flew through this and would definitely recommend.

A suspenseful and haunting social horror about young Black girls going missing in a small Rust Belt town. It’s dark and layered. It is a slow burn thriller/horror but the end is absolutely worth it. This was a brilliant debut and I cannot wait to read more from this author!
