The Branded by Jo Riccioni

I wanted to love this book so much. The premise, world building, lore, and characters were so well done.
What lost me was most of the significant events were happening outside of our main characters point of view. Nara is dragged along through the story by events or from deception and her thoughts became a little repetitive. If Branded had multiple POV’s (Osha, Brim, Nixim, even Haus) I think it would have been a more dynamic read.
That being said I still really enjoyed this book and the huge world and I’m interested to see what happens in book two!

The Book of Azrael by Amber V. Nicole

I am not a fan of contemporary fantasy so please take this review with a grain of salt. Or two.
First I could not understand how immature Dianna was. It wasn’t at all in line with the awful things she apparently did for Kaden over the last thousand years she’s been alive. And every “bad thing” she does is turned around so it’s actually a good thing?
I could only picture Liam as a robot learning about this new world. And his powers were supposed to be so amazing but he never used them!
I can see why this book is popular, the setting is fun, the stakes are high, the banter was decent. The pacing and the characters just didn’t hit for me.

This was a cinematic, fast paced, character driven rollercoaster!!!
The characters were so well rounded and had great backstory. I love Remy and immediately felt protective of him. Xiaodan and Zidan had the best introductions!
This was a really fun read and could definitely see this being made into an anime!

The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie

This book was a perfect character study! Every action was so in line with each characters personality, their backgrounds fully formed, even the glimpses into their way of thinking!
I easily find myself lost with all the name in high fantasies but The Blade Itself had so many distinct and memorable characters that many times I didn’t even need to hear a name, just their description!
I loved this book and I’m very excited to continue!
Major shout out to Stephen West for having a different voice for every character. I have no idea how someone can do what he does!

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman

Very funny, dry and dark humor. I loved the main characters. The writing got pretty goofy at times (the horse/prostitute scene) and the story was a little too disjointed. This was dark fantasy in the same vein as Dark Crystal. Creepy, moody, at times gruesome.
I might pick up Daughter’s War (book two) as I’d love to hear more from Galva’s point of view!
