The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson
4.0
4 stars for The Weight of Blood. If you liked the movie/book Carrie, this is pretty much exactly the same story but Carrie and the boyfriend are black instead of white. I so much want to give this book 5 stars but there are so many things directly from Carrie and I was just hoping for more originality. I’ll just say, I went and rewatched Carrie right after I finished reading and there are direct quotes (multiple). If a book is going to be a remake of a previous book/movie I’d prefer the description say so.
I will say though I LOVED the twist on the story to bring light on racism.

Dawn by Octavia E. Butler
5.0
5 STARS.
You will love this book if you love:
-out of this world science fiction
-extra terrestrials
-imaginative thinking
I loved everything about this book! The ending of course has me hungry for more, but it doesn’t leave off on a HUGE cliff hanger, which I really appreciate.
Dawn follows our main character- Lilith, as she’s saved by an extra terrestrial community after a war destroys the earth. As much as she hates the Oankali (the extra terrestrials) she loves them just as much. After her training is complete she’s set on a mission to help other humans restore earth.
I wish I would have found this book years ago. It’s hard to put in words how much I’ve enjoyed this read.

House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson
3.0
3 stars for House of Hunger. The storyline is unique and creative. The start is strong and kept my interest. The middle of the book lacked any entertainment, story, or character development, thus feeling somewhat useless. Then the last 10% is good again. I would have liked to see more events leading up to the ending or something that would have hooked my interest in the middle of the story.
In this book you follow Marion, who was raised poor and in the slumps working as a maid. She had an opportunity to become a blood maid, one who spills their blood for the rich to enjoy and to bring health. Marion is welcomed into the House of Hunger where deep secrets lie in the bowels of the house.

Us Dark Few by Alexis Patton
5.0
5 stars for Us Dark Few. I have a soft spot for dedication pages that are for the reader and with this “To all the dreamers and misfits. And those who prefer dancing in the dark.” I was hooked from the beginning. I was not expecting the love trope here but it delivered! I found myself holding my breath in anticipation near the ending of the book. I truly enjoyed this story and I need book 2 ASAP! Lbvs.
If you like science fiction, enemies to maybe lovers, and a quick paced story then you’ll love Us dark few. This book follows Khalani as her life in Apollo, the under ground world as surface earth is uninhabitable from radiation, is torn into pieces when she’s thrown into prison where murder, abuse and punishment are encouraged. Though all odds are against Khalanis survival she makes alliances and she navigates her way through the prison of Branderhelm.

The Poisons We Drink by Bethany Baptiste
Thank you to NetGalley for the audio ARC. I’m waiting to officially post my review until I can read a physical book. The audiobook was too heavy with information for me to retain it all, if you’re able to obtain all information for fantasy books then you’ll be fine, I however am not that great at making mental notes. The magic system was amazing in this story and there was always something happening. The narration was done amazingly well, the only complaint I have is of one annoying whiny character
Phantom by Greer Rivers
3.0
3 stars for Phantom. You’ll like this book if you enjoy -phantom of the opera, -smut, -obsession, -New Orleans Mafia.
In this book you follow Scarlett who suffers from mental illness. Being a student in the House of Opera has its perks, but her secret admirer is definitely the best. There are two sides to every story and as truth unfold Scarlet has to put her trust in love.
This was a fun read and I enjoyed it. Scarlet is very much predictable and one of the characters you just have to roll your eyes at. The phantom is hot and mysterious. There’s enough story telling to hold your interest outside of all the smut.

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler
3.0
I REALLY thought this was going to blow my mind when reading, I love Octavia butlers Liliths brood series and just wanted to love this too. You may like this book if you like semi sci-fi, historical fiction, time travel, and blunt truth facing slavery.
Kindred started out great, I was hooked and invested from the first few chapters. As I continued to read I felt it was getting almost repetitive. I LOVED the concept of this book, a modern day black women being pulled back in time to live in times of slavery. I loved Dana’s attitude / character. The main thing is, this book had so much potential to add some more complexity to it and go deeper into the time travel but it just didn’t. The majority of the book was just reading about slavery. All in all I’m happy I read it, the concept was creative and I’d recommend this in certain circumstances.
