Dream When You're Feeling Blue by Elizabeth Berg

This book read much like a young adult novel. There was too much conversation, and not enough plot and conflict.

The end of the book abruptly rushes forward and leaves the reader confused and unsatisfactorily wondering what happened in between.

This book had me waning from interest to indifference as it alternated from the main character's past to her present. I found the chapters involving her childhood, and her relationship with her mother, father, and friends, to be much more interesting and engaging than the chapters concerning her adult life and the effect that her childhood had on it. I did not care for the character as an adult, and her affair did not pull me in and make me anticipate what the end result would be. The book also would have been better if it had been shorter. It seems as if we are spinning our wheels in the present-day chapters, as not much happens.

The premise of this book was interesting, however, I felt as if the author did not go deep enough. The book mainly dealt with factual information. Further insight into the character's thoughts, feelings, and motives would have led to a more fulfilling and engaging read.

You are thrown into this book, and the short, abrupt chapters don't assist you much in gathering knowledge and interest in the plot. While okay at some points, the book became rather tedious when it began jumping all over the place and pulling in incredulous situations. Lastly, the story dragged on for far too long.

Gripping, true-to-life account of escaping domestic abuse.
