Lynn Cahoon has written another lovely novella with the cast from the Farm to Fork mysteries. But Penned In isn’t your stereotypical cozy mystery. It’s cold and creepy with a bit of the paranormal. The story starts with the imprisonment of Angie Turner, owner and lead chef of The County Seat, the rest of her staff, her boyfriend, Ian, and even Dom her dog in the Old Idaho Penitentiary. What should have been an interesting night filled with history turns spooky after one of the tour guides is murder and ghosts appear. Angie and her friends have to work fast under unusual circumstances to solve this mystery. A great quick read!

I read this when I was young, I think the first time in 6th grade. I know I read it twice at least before college. It still brings back wonderful memories.

Maya Corrigan’s Gingerdead Man is another great cozy murder mystery in the Five Ingredient series. It was so gripping I didn’t want to put it down. Val, the heroine, has to solve the murder before Christmas and before her friend Bethany is hurt. The characters, scenery, and food, as always, make this story. Ms. Corrigan knows how to set a scene, making the reader feel as if they’re standing on the cold street or in the warm kitchen. It has been interesting to see the characters grow and learn more about their back stories with each of these books. And never have I wanted a gingerbread cookie so bad. Add dash of humor and romance and you have a fun mystery read with a holiday spin that has it all.
