I read this book when i was ten, and it sparked such a large love for reading. It was innaporopriate for my age, definately, but it was so enticing that even my younger self struggled putting it down. I remember rereading it almost every night when i was meant to be asleep and pretending to be on my phone or getting a drink whenever my mum came up to question why my light was on. The emotions in this book felt real, the romance felt genuine and i loved the relationship between the mc and her best friend. I loved everyone in this story, and i loved that they could all be assholes. It felt honest, and raw. The fact that Susanna Jones had her characters be so crude at times whilst being likeable speaks volumes as to how talented her writing was. A problem i have with lots of books is that the characters always feel fictional, these ones didn't. When reading this book, as far as i was aware they were all very, very real. I knew i wasn't meant to like some of these characters, but how could i help it? This book made me dread finishing it, i just wanted to read page after page after page, and the fact that its content was limited physically upset me.
I enjoyed reading this book, and well, thats all. I loved having a blind girl as the main character and the fact that the evil in this story comes from a place of pure realism gave me goosebumps whenever i picked up this book. Sometimes the aknowledgement that the things that take place in a book happen commonly in real life can be a real eye opener. Sadly, the book wasn't really long, and although i found it in the young adults section of my local library, it felt like the kind of book your school would assign you to read with your tutor or have read out in an assembly about drug trafficking or gang crime. I didn't find myself dreading reading this though, and i finished it within a day so that is a good sign. I recommend this if you're trying to get yourself back into reading after a long break for sure.
I feel like people may disagree with my 5 star rating, however as someone who consistently struggles with attending school this book really hit home, and i feel like it was a fairly accurate portrayal of the relationship between a struggling child and parents too. I loved all the dynamics between the MC and other characters, and i ADORED the mystery the book presents you with - it always keeps you guessing! The final plot twist really touched my heart and i was holding back tears. It feels like feelings are brushed over at times in order to further the story, but when it isnt brushed over my god its phenominal writing. I will warn you, once you pick the book up you're going to struggle putting it down! Definately will be rereading this.
Genuinely went into this book expecting to love it, was only slightly let down when i came out liking it. The mc is obviously traumatised, however i found his immaturity and innocence to be very unrealistic most of the time as someone who is very close to his age. I loved how real it got though, nothing felt sugarcoated and the story being made up of multiple letters was muah!
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
4.5
I found myself easily attatched to the characters, however was also thrown by random racist or sexist comments here and there - i get its an era thing but it was the only thing stopping my from fully loving every one of the losers.
