that rocked
a young woman, whose pianist parents fled the cultural revolution, grows up as a prodigy at a conservatory funded by an anonymous benefactor. after tragedy implodes their lives, she stops playing and pursues odd jobs and online hookups until stumbling into a role at Holistik. A Goop-esque storefront with treatments pioneering scientific breakthroughs are offered to the wealthiest clients. her employment benefits - free (mandatory) treatments and health monitoring - come at a high cost. opportunities for new roles fuel financial freedom and further tragedy, and her relationships with her peers and the company’s founding family drive her deeper into the horrifying realities of health, wellness, and beauty taken to their extremes.
pacing is great - tension builds almost exponentially throughout without rushing the story
built to a truly gruesome climax and an emotionally fulfilling but sincere, distinctive conclusion

this ROCKED i’m going to read kingfisher’s entire catalogue
funny and subtle and subverts a lot of fantasy tropes well, the same intentional characters and writing as WMTD, and the perfect length

i’m invested! unfortunately i was ENTIRELY unprepared for our two male leads to reveal themselves which makes me think i am stupid
i love a prophecy
multiple POVs being used deftly here
fantasy names are reliably awful and i don’t know why we’re making choices like Kaden when the whole alphabet is available
