cavafy's Reviews (37)
The nature of posthumous collected works is that they showcase stories that are 5 stars, and a lot that are probably 1's...
I love kafka's portrayal of an outsiders perspective and struggles that are hard to articulate through any other medium besides literature. Description of a struggle means the world to me and it brought me joy to see the threads of my favourite story woven throughout the rest of kafka's oeuvre.

So wonderful.... some of the best modern poetry I've read. I teared up multiple times (especially at the cat poem... the love put into it is tangible).

It astounds me how coherent this collection is. All the poems are connected (elk, splitting, god, smoke, and more ideas reappear), yet each poem has something new to say.
when I first read this book years ago I would have given it 100000000 stars... I was so obsessed and thought it was the greatest book ever written. I still feel extremely fond of tsoa and the nostalgia I get from it is insane, but over the years I've realised its faults and have read better books, so 13 year old me would be devastated to know I've not given it 5 stars. I just dont really like how Miller treats her female characters and imposes modern moral ideas like monogamy and other such things to sanitise the story. Why bother basing the story off of patroclus and achilles when so much of their actual characters are changed to be more palatable? I also think most of the section of the book set during the war is quite forgettable and I wish it was more exciting.
But also...... the way patroclus and achilles' relationship is developed..... literally thinking about it makes me tear up its just so wonderful. I have never cried so hard because of a book before and I dont think I ever will again, so maybe one day this will become a 5 star again.

I really wish this book was at least as loved as no longer human :( in my opinion it is so much more beautifully written and heartfelt and dazai shows a rare empathy towards women which is quite lacking from his other books. I think kazuko comes off as insufferably naive, but this is what enables her to live
PEAK unreliable narration. I feel like most people who give this book a bad review approach it thinking its a scary horror ghost blah blah blah genre story, but its not. This is a piece of literature without the satisfying explanation or ending that you would expect if you read it through the lens of genre. Not for those who like to be spoon-fed stories without using their brain. anyways journeys end in lovers meeting <3
i love how kokoro has so many mysteries that build anticipation, it makes it exciting in a way so few other books can achieve without delving into the supernatural or extreme. also its so beautifully written and paced <3
love love love love love !!! and this collection has the most amazing translators notes section
"sweet sorrymeat for the little lusts of the birds"
I love the humour so much in this translation... and I'm obsessed with the wordplay
