I was dubious about reading this one after having not enjoyed the author's other recent release, Magnus Chase #1. My concern was we would have yet another main character who was a clone of Percy Jackson/Jason Grace. Fortunately that turned out to not be the case, and the voice and character of the main protagonist are well developed and easily distinguishable. My only gripe about this one is the constant over the top pop culture references. They add nothing to the story other than a cheap laugh and will really affect the re-readability in years to come. Nevertheless, looking forward to book 2.
