Disadvantage is a contemporary dark romance with fantasy elements attached to it. Cole and Kathryn meet through a mutual friend. He joins her TTRPG group, and catches her cheating on her rolls. The pair have instant chemistry, but Kat is in a tense relationship with a horrible man.
Something I really loved about this book was the unexpected vibes I had while reading it. It's a story unlike anything I've read before. I really love a contemporary story sprinkled with some fantasy, and that is exactly what Disadvantage provided. You have psychics, witches, gods, vampires and demons, but you also have what is essentially Dungeons & Dragons, and alligators.
Disadvantaged is fast-paced, and the content will keep you itching to find out what happens next. It is part of the Scavenger series, but you don't have to read the rest of the series to be able to follow Disadvantage. Granted, reading this book will make you want to read the rest of them!
I would definitely recommend this book to someone looking for a quick and dark read. I can't wait to read the rest of the Scavenger series, and I'm excited to see what's next from S.A. Burd!
I received and advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Royally Rebellious is a cute contemporary engagement of convenience romance. Queen Alexandra agrees to an arranged engagement to release herself and her sisters from a regency run by her dictator grandmother. Prince Rickard agrees to the set up to save his family from a royal scandal.
Royally Rebellious is the kind of book I would describe as a palate cleanser, the kind of fluffy romance I would choose to read between books that are heavy on plot or dark themes. While the stakes are high for the characters in the book, I won't feel as emotionally ripped apart if things don't end up the way I want them to. I like that in a book, especially having just come off a book that was really heavy on the fantasy aspect, Royally Rebellious was a nice change of pace.
The characters are cute but not overly complex, and there is a lot of character development over the course of the story. Rick starts off with his entire personality being "I need to get laid now," while Alexandra starts off as sheltered and naïve, but both grow into more mature versions of themselves throughout the story, making their flaws a pivotal part of the story.
I would have liked to see a bit less in time jumping, because there are many times where the story jumps forward, sometimes even months at a time, but the book was fast-paced and easy to follow.
I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a light, easy read. I am interested in seeing how the stories continue, as the series is going to be a bit of Bridgerton style, with each book following a different sister.
