I wanted this to be good. I really did, but oh my god was it just so slow and the ending so bad. I mean yes it nodded to nimue being the lady of the lake, but also the ending with the pope? Like shut up?? Idk the writing was eh and the story was eh and I really wanted a good retelling of the knights of the round table but the character reveals were good and just amounted to nothing. I have no idea if there’s a second book or will be, but I don’t care bc I won’t be reading it.
I mean this in the best way possible, but what the FUCK did I just read?
All of these characters are so undeniable hate-able that they are lovable. They are real. I hated every character at the start and loved (almost) all of them in the end. This book is what magic would be if it could be perceived to exist.
While I felt awfully stupid while reading this book as I am not big brained enough to know all the words in this difficulty beautiful prose of a book, it was captivating from start to finish. I can’t even put into proper words the emotional rollercoaster I was just thrown through.
What is magic? What is the purpose of magic? If it is not something that should be handled as delicately as the most fragile thing while being the thread that makes up everything that could ever be considered dangerous.
That is what this book is. And I need more.

I believe there is a certain magic in authors. Like Widget’s “purpose”, it is an authors purpose to create and pass on stories.
Erin Morgenstern does a particularly amazing job at creating magic within her stories. With a slow burn of character and world building to an explosion of everything coming together in the last 100 pages (quite literally in this book).
It is books like these that inspire me to write my own stories. To share my personal story with others. To spread the magic that also resides in me. As there is much magic in the world if only we open ourselves up enough to see it. Isn’t that what this book is about? Believing what you cannot see. Accepting with your whole heart that magic, whether in the literal sense or not, exists. It is there.
And it is so simple to create it.

4.5/5 a slow burn story with a slow burn romance of magic and love and the passion one holds for the things they have created and felt. I will forever love Morgenstern’s poetical writing and I think she will never cease to amaze me with her stories. While they take a moment to get into, as she builds the worlds in such a perfect way that it is hard to stop reading no matter how little action there may be, they are mind blowing. Always worth the read.

I’m honestly surprised with how closely the show is following the events of the books so far. Like yes it has changed a few details but it mostly sticks to the plot.

I’m not really a huge fan of the short story telling of this book, but the writing is really well done and very driven. It is fast paced while also giving lore and world building. I’m glad I went back to read this before continuing with book one (and will read book .7 before I read number one) as it gives a lot of backstory to the characters. Although, having watched the show first I was already familiar. Looking forward to getting to parts I’m not familiar with.

I don’t like sad books. I don’t ever buy them for myself, but my best friend bought me this and so I wanted to read it anyways.
Despite not liking sad books, and not usually reading anything outside of fantasy, I found it really hard to put down this book.

As much as I know that I could predict much of the story as it is a retelling of Cinderella. I found every other plot line in the story to be just as predictable which made it quite a slow read until around the last 100 pages of the book when the action was at full pace.
I’m weary to read the next books as I don’t really like books where I can predict the whole plot within a few chapters.
