maybe i wasn’t ready to read this book. the plot is great and the idea of discussing the complex relationship between Brown/Desi women is needed, but i struggled to relate to it. maybe because it’s supposed to be about a different generation of Brown women, but i did not feel anything. i will say the middle of the book is a lot stronger than the ending and while i didn’t care about the way the characters interact with each other, Neela breaking down her own envy and insecurity through Rukmini was nicely done. all of the characters are insufferable and i like how they bonded over a hatred for the bubbly and somewhat misguided Rukmini. that was the most real part. Neela and Rukmini are complex and though Rukmini makes sense to root for, the depth in which Neela is dissected throughout the book does so much for her character and her justification of wanting to protect her work. i think Vivek Shraya’s mind is great and if i read her work outside of book form, i’d find a deeper connection to what she has to say about relationships within the community but that’s a personal problem. i would still love to read more of Shraya’s books.

one of my favourite books ever

levine has such a perfect flow when it comes to
writing, definitely has perfected how to keep the reader’s attention without jeopardizing the story

the plot is pretty unique for a murder mystery.
definitely has a comedic twist on a mystery book.
every character that is seen as a suspect has a
good reason to be considered one. the actual killer,
to me, was such a clever twist and one that was
unexpected

i love the theme of cats on covers that levine has,
would make for great coffee table book even if the
books themselves are very small

the protagonist is likeable even if she has
buzzfeed qualities

absolutely loved rowell's writing and the unique plot

i found every single character to be likeable, even
neal

pacing was lovely, never a dull moment or a scene
in the book that didnt need to be there. every single
moment in the book had to be there to progress
character development

rowell has a good mix of telling the reader whats
going on and showing them whats going on

flashbacks werent confusing and the idea of a
magic telephone isnt seen as cheesy, honestly was
done pretty tastefully. wasnt used too often, just
enough

kinda slow, but the writing is pretty good. made me
want to keep reading

the way hiaasen writes is clear and simple,
appreciated that

characters are likeable and are well-rounded

call backs aren't cringey and actually mean something

the plot itself was alright

the kind of book i would have liked as a kid

has cute pictures and a story that moved fairly quickly, probably because its meant for kids

rating would have been higher if i was 8 and within the age demographic

easy read but the plot twist at the end was
predictable and honestly, not a great one
pacing was alright, but lack of plot kills any
potential the story could've had

i like yoon's writing overall, would give her newer
work a try
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

one of my least favourite books

absolutely hated how ness wrote in the character's
accent, it made it very frustrating

the book is absolutely massive but the pace is
incredibly slow. unnecessary amount of characters
being presumed dead, but then coming back.

the theme is there if you squint really hard. the
concept of "what it means to be a man" is explored
but it doesnt have a lasting impact

absolutely not gonna look into the rest of the series but
i liked the relationship between two main characters and their motivations
