So yay, everythings "good" now. Keegan is in prison- wait. What? NO! We didn't want him in prison! We wanted him dead. We knew he'd kill Casey if he got the chance, we wanted either her to kill him, or Dylan to kill him in Casey's defense.
The case of Ava and Cole just went out the window, never to be spoken of again.
And We never met back up with Laura and Sandra and Hannah and her baby.
No, there's some more kissing between Casey and Dylan. Which should not have happened at all. It completely undermines his authority in bringing her justice.
OH YEAH and they just go and get married afterwards? THEY DONT KNOW EACH OTHER.
No. This was a waste of time, I really didnt like it at all. The case of Ava being sexually abused in exchange for drugs, the accusation of Cole. It all seemed like a horrifying placeholder for Keegan to run around a bit. And then romance developing completely creeped me out, Casey and Dylan barely know each other, and they shouldn't be involved in romantic endeavors until she's cleared.
The pacing of this book saved it, it was always moving, and if it hadnt been for that I would have probably dnfed. Christian fiction is really starting to bug me, because it's most often that we have an MC who is not a christian, and the book follows them becoming one. This one wasnt the most aggravating, but it still irked me a bit. The things that happened all seemed a bit out of the blue. Still though it had enough intrigue to keep me going, and I really appreciated the authors note at the end of the book. But I don't think I would recommend this to anyone.
We have the main case of Brent's death, and then Casey leaves, manages to find an ID super fast, and then manages to solve a missing teen case in a random town? and then just leave without the friend she's made ever thanking her? I did not like that
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
4.5
Okay, so this kind of thing is hard to win me over for, I don't really recall reading anything quite like it before. I picked this up because Chantel at An Intentional Life on Youtube recommended it, saying the next book would be coming out soon! I really like reading the first book a few months or weeks before the release date of the next book, so I can think about what happened and anticipate the next one with everyone else.
I read this book in one sitting, I was not going to put it down till I got to the end, and the end was satisfying, while also leaving some things to be uncovered in the next book!
The pacing is excellent, It takes about 38 pages to set up the character, how she's been living and how she feels about it. There's some mysterious happenings and intrigue builds up, and then the big reveal happens. I was hooked.
Barnes does pretty well with relationships and tension, I was confused for a bit though as Avery interacted with the Hawthorne boys, because they all felt the same to me for a while. There are little mysteries about the people in the Hawthorne House mixed in with the main mystery. I really enjoyed tension in this book. Though I wasn't a big fan of the romance. (It really didn't bug me as much as other books have though.)
I KNEW that Harry was involved!(I said so in my goodreads updates) I didnt suspect him to be Tobias, but I knew he probably had something to do with it, and now he's one of the main parts of the next book! I ship Avery and Grayson, but for a while when it looked like that wasnt actually going to happen, Jameson seemed okay... Not anymore though, I look foreward to whats going to happen!
Moderate: Child death, Gun violence, Sexual content, and Death of parent
Content Warnings- sort of non spoilery -mention of two girls in a romantic relationship, mention of boys and girls in romantic relationships, some kissing between characters, some characters are seen in a character of the opposite sex's room, some kissing, characters are shot at, there's a scene involving car violence.
This book was fun! It’s my favorite book of Levensellers so far! I thought it was a standalone, so when it ended without ending I was disappointed. I will definitely be picking the next book up when it releases!
The Writing Style was easy to read, I like the way it flowed.
The character work was pretty good for Ziva, but the other characters fell a bit flat for some of the book. Thankfully I think they’re well on their way to be solid characters by the end of the book
Plot: well, there isn’t much of a plot. Don’t really expect that much, the characters made up for it for me! (Though that ending was a bit lacking.)
Worldbuilding: there isn’t much, it’s a very narrow scope of a story, which is usual for Levenseller, so I wasn’t surprised. I don’t think it necessarily needs it, but I would have liked more description.
