I loved this story and all the romance. Such a fun read!! The spurts of Spanish really flowed well. Definitely worth reading!
Short. Heartbreaking. Words that just touch your soul. On a personal note (because everyone handles their grief differently) even though it was short I had to pace myself, stirred up a lot of emotions.
Quick read, maybe too quick? I liked that the writing layout was a mixture of press releases and different characters points of view. There’s something extra scary about the ocean unknown (might just be me?) but let’s add beautifully haunting murderous mermaids to it.

3.5 stars. Not what I expected (also didn’t read the summary so I did go in blind). I really loved the middle, but thanksgiving dinner?! Say lessssss, what a wild ride going through that specific section.
So why 3.5? Because it was hard to start and then alas the ending. Maybe the hard to start was my fault, I am a mood reader, and a lot is riding on my mood for books. None of my reasons are negative, but hear me out! Iffffff you’re going to tell me Emira grew up & turned out okay after experiencing her twenties college transition. Then give me a little more on Briar, helloooooo?!

This book had me bawling like a baby in the airport. I literally covered my mouth dramatically & made a v loud noise at one point. To tell you I was enthralled with this very heavy topic of teens with CF, where love can be found, just le sigh in the best way. Definitely for fans of YA, think less depressing than all the bright places but with all the good writing bits.
The movie was so good to watch after reading! I buddy read with some of my #hillzshelf bookclub friends & then we buddy watched. It most def was the best way to experience this story.

The most real but unreal story of black love. Will definitely be reading this author again. Highly recommend, it makes that impossible kind of love feel possible ✨
PS read up on trigger warnings for this one. Would love to say more but I read this during a v traumatic personal experience, so when I say I FELT this book is an understatement. (mood reader)

Sad all around finally ended sort of happy, kinda full circle? 2007 the collapse of Lehman Brothers, of course I listened to a 2007 Spotify top hits playlist while reading.
Cameroonian immigrants coming to America to fulfill their dreams, working for white rich family, lots of rich privileged chaos. Jende was so unlikable as the main character. Immigration, addiction (drugs/alcohol), death, domestic abuse/dv, economic collapse. Everything was pretty heavy throughout the book and Jende/Neni are so naive in the beginning it’s painful.
The writing style was sometimes hard to tell who’s perspective I was reading from. Also some punctuation I couldn’t tell if it was errors or if I was nit picking.
*best improved reading experience was when at Ch. 59 I played 200% Zoblazo until I finished. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
